BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tub ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Miisterton Borough Council was held last night. Present—His Worship -the. Mayor, and Crs, Williams, Perry, Chamberlain, ' Gapper, Johnston, Hessey, Heron,-Muir, and Bacon.: - ' The minutes of. tlie previous meeting tvero read and confirmed, CORRESPONDENCE, The Town Clerk read the correspondence inward and outward, A letter from Mrs Hacker, askin? that the connection from the lower part of Church-street and Bannister-street might be carried out, was referred to the Works Committee, as was'also another from Mr F. King, asking for a culvert to be placed in Kirton-street.

Mr R, Donald wrote, stating that if the willows were not planted on the bank of the Waipoua river within a weok, it would be useless to plant them this season. Mr Donald considered that an injustice was dona to liira, at he could have sold the willows he had offered to the Publio Works Department, which was in urgent want of them. Cr Haron, as Chairman of the Works Committee, stated that the bank of the riyer had'been planted, but that it had been found cheaper to get the willows in town.' It was resolved that Mr Donald be written to to that effect, and also to thank' him for the offer ho had.made, . The. Borough solicitor wrote, stating that it would be necessary to authorize two Councillors to -sitpi the agreement with the gas engineer., • ■lt was resolved that'that the . Major and Or Gapper be authorized to, sign : the agreement. ; " Messrs Wiokerson and Wagland apf

plied for permission-'to ereot a verandah, in front'of. their shop in Queen-street/ Granted.. .. _; - • BOROOOH B6UND'4RIEB< ■ The Oonimittee..appuinted to consider the petition of Mr Woodroofe and others for the reduotion of the area of the. Borough, reported tliaCsuch a step, would be detrimental to the' best interests of the Borough. The Town Olerk read the opinion of the Borough solicitor on the subjoot, which was to, the.effect that it .could not be done without disolving the Borough. The Mayor, in moving the adoption of the report, said it was a "pity that so many as 88 burgesses should be discontented, and the . Oounoil had taken that into consideration ivhen it appointed a Committee. There- were means for increasing the area, but they could not reduce it without dissolving the Borough. It was almost like impudence—though that was a hard wOrd-toask the Borough to die so that they could bury them. It would have beon as well if they could have limited tho Borough, because the leaders in the movement were grumblers who considered it a great injustice to have to pay rates at all. They could do a great deal better without them. 'lf they took an account they found that they had expended a good deal, more money on the outskirts than in the centre of- the Borough. It would serve these people right if they were handed over to the Council. (Laughter).' . Or Chamberlain seconded the motion, which was carried:' ' - OVERSEERS REPORT. 1 The. Overseer reported that he planted about 15 chains of the bank of the Waipoua with willows, Tho report also referred to* several minor items. The report was adopted, • STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

MICHAEL DIXON STREET. . The Works Committee recommended that Michael Dixon-street be accepted as a private street on satisfactory evidence being given that 40ft all through had been set aside for the street. OA 9 COMMITTEE,-

The Gas Committee brought up a report referring to a number of details regarding the Gasworks, also that tho Mayor had made arrangements for opening a gas loan account with the Bank of Australasia, payment for overdraft to be seven per cent.

Tho report was adopted. It was resolved that the members of the Gas Committee be authorised to sign cheques on the Gas account. _ Cr Heron wished to impress the Council with the necessity of keeping the expenditure on this account as low as possible.

The Mayor said he supposed it was only an idle rumor that Mr Woodroofe had offored the money at fivo per cent (laughter). Cr Hessey suggested that they should write and inquire (renewed laughter). This concluded the business, and the Council adjourned.
