(B? ELKOIR'O TELEGRAPH—UOPVRIGHT Keoter's Telegrams. Melbourne, August 25, The Hotham branch of the Federal Bank of Australia (Limited) was entered by burglars last night. The robbers commenced operations upon the safe, which they were success ul in opening, and abstracted upwards of £llOO.

Further information respecting the robbery at the Hotham Branch of the Federal Bank last night shows that the amount abstracted was much greater than at first reported. The total amount Btolen from the safe was £2859, consisting of £lOl9 Federal Bauk notes (whereof £IOO were in .fifties), £461 in gold, and £124 in silver, A clerk named Robinson, aged 24, who slept on tho premises in o ose proximity to the safe, asserts that he returned to .the bank to sleep about midnight, and was not disturbed during the nitjht. He further states, that by mistake he left the keys in the keyhole of the door, - Tliere are no signs of force being used to enter the premises or open the safe, but'the inner ; drawers of the latter had been broken open. The explanation of Robinson is not considered a sitUfactory one. Later, Further inquiry into the Hotham Bank robbery has resulted in the arrest on su ipio o i of the c'erk,- Robinson,' who occupied the premises. When questioned with regard to his movements his answers were equivocal, and he was proved to. luve heon in the habit of keeping bad company. ■
