WAIRARAPA WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.
A antETiHQ of the above was held on Saturday. Present :—Crs W. Booth (Chairman) Henry Bunny,. A. Matthews, 0. Phillips, H. Braithwaite, H. R. Bunny, J. Martin and J, Tully, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the Treasurer reported a credit balance of £70317s lid. Correspondence were read from the 'Public Works Department re Wainuioru Bridge,' stating that the money would be granted on condition that the usual tax be levied for the repayment of it, From WairarapaEast County Council, re combining with them in reference to suryeys of Crown Lands &c. . A lot of correspondence were read in. reference to the meeting of delegates, which was held in Wellington some weeks ago. ... From Taratahi-Carterton Road Board for refund of monies due oil behalf of the Rurunuiorangi reserve. The Engineer's report oi\ the deviation of the Martinborough-Pahp.ua road, also from Mr Yeal, re railway reform, from Manawatu Road Board re the system of Government audit,- were also read..' . Or H. Bunny thought that it could not matter muoli to them about the auditing, 1 as. they had not had their accounts audited for some four years. Several letters were read frtnn the letter book. Cr Martin informed the Council that he had received a letter from Mr King re the survey of the Martiriborough-Pahaua road, and stated that ill-health had prevented him from attending to it, but as soon as he was able, about a day and a half would complete the field work. There was a good deal of complaint made by Councillors in respe'dt to the delay of the Engineer in not executing works authorised by the Council, Or H. R. Bunny moved, and Cr H. Braithwaite seconded, ihat the money due from the Council re the Hurunuiorangi Reserve, be paid.
The minutes of the Public Works Committee meeting of the Council were read and confirmed; the Chairman made a statement in reference to the conference of delegates in Wellington, which was practically of no value. Cr H. Bunny made a statement in reference to tho- endowment of land to the Harbor Board, and stated that he did not agree to these endowments, as it practically locked up the land against settlement, and he moved that a requisition be sent from'this Council to the Government to protest against it. The motion was seconded by Cr Phillips, and it was further added, that no endowments be made to any public body, unless it was under the system of the Waste Lands Boards. The motion had chiefly reference to the Mangatainoke Block,—Carried. Cr H, Bunny moved that a copy of the resolution bo forwarded to the Government. ■
Cr Phillips moved that all endowments be leased under the provisions of the Crown Land laws.
An amendment was moved by Or Phillips to the effect that all endowments to the public bodies should be vested in the Waste Land Boards of the colony. Seconded by Or H. R. Bunny and carried. The Chairman read a letter from the Wellington Harbor Board asking for the Council's affirmation as to the Harbor Board's legal right to the reclaimed land. The affirmation was given. . Moved by CrH, R, Bunny and seconded by Cr Tullv, that the definitions of the boundaries of the Wainuioru district be left in the hands of the Public Works Committee.
Mr King explained, that owing to' the continuous bad weather he had not been able to complete the survey of the Martinborough-Paliaua road, but it would be completed so as to allow for tenders to be called for the work.
Or Mathews gave notice to move at the next meeting of the Council, That a petition be made to the Government to declare the Wairarapa Lake a public place. It was resolved to leavo it in the hands of tho Chairman to arrange when the next meeting of the Council is to be held. The meeting then terminated.
