(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) THURSDAY. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Mr Shrimski gave notice to move in Committee on the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, for the repeal of all clauses relating to the totalisator. The West Coast Settlement Bill and the Industrial Schools liill were read a second time. Mr Barnicoat moved the second readng of the School Committees Eloction Bill. Mr Pollen moved that it be read six months hence. After discussion, the second reading was carried by 18 to 17, The Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Bill was committed. Mr Whitakeu moved an amendment, providing that weeps not exceeding £5 should bo per. mitted, Agreed to on the voices. Mr Shrimski moved to repeal the clauses relating to the totalisator, but the motion was negatived without discussion. Tho Bill was then reported, and the Council adjourned at 4.45. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. Replying to questions it was stated that if any sum .were placed on. the estimates for boring for coal, the Foreßt Hill distriot would receive its share; that it was proposed shortly to test the feeling of the House on tho payment of Coroner's juries; that it was not intended to take any steps for promoting steam communication with India; that it was intended to vest the Tahuna park in the Otago Pastoral Association for all time, but not. as a freehold; that a letter had been received from the Chief Justice in regard to the inadequacy of the Supreme Oourt accommodation at Gisborno, but the Government did not fool themselves warranted in putting a sum on the estimates for carrying out liis suggestions; that the Public Works Statement would be brought down without much further delay. Several unopposed returns were agreed to.
Tho Wellington Leasehold Bill and Tiraaru Harbor Board Loan Bill wore reported, road a third time, and passed. The Otago Harbor Board Leasing Bill, Invercargill Loan Consolidation Bill, and Dunedin Cattle Market Reserve Leasing Bill were committed, read a third time, and passed. Mr Balunce moved the second reading of the Wanganui Harbor Bill, the object of which was to enable the Wanganui Harbor Board.to borrow £40,000 for harbor improvements, Agreed to. .Major Atkinson moved the second reading of the Patea Harbor Board Bill, which was intended to re-constitute the Board, and to give it control over rivers. Agreed to. The Presbyterian Church Property Bill, Seaman's Representation Bill, Rating Act Amendment Bill, Impounding Act Amendment Bill, and Evidence Further Amendment Bill were reported, read a third timo, and passed. Mr Babron moved tlfe second reading of the Hours of Polling Bill. •; The House rose at 5.30. - EVEVING SITTING, After a short disoußsion the Hours of Polling Bill was red a second time on division, by 38 to 32. Mi Stewart moved the iscond reading
of the licensing Act Amendment Bill.; "Mr Srotnr objected tg the | Bill, as- it was an attempt to destroy existing : law 'on the question,. and he moved that it be read six months hence. After a lengthened discussion the second ■reading was carried by 36 to 26,' Mr Siiddon moved the second reading of the Hawkers and Pedlars Bill. Agreed to. The House went into Committee on the Sale of Poisons Bill, Mr Toie moved that prowess be reported. Agreed to. The - fiecond reading of the Financial Arrangements Act Amendment Bill was agreed to. - Mr Bkadshaw moved the second reading of the Eight Hours Bill. Mr Kerr moved that it be read six months hence, After a short discussion, the Bill was thrown out by 34 to 21. The House went into Committee on. the. Distress Bill. Several unimportant amendments were agreed to, and the Bill w»b reported, The llous? rose at 1,20 a.m.
