LAND BOARD.

. : (Evening Press.) N The fortnightly meeting of the Lands Board was held yesterday morning, Present—Messrs J. \V. A. Marchant (Chairman), H. Bunny, W. A. Fitzhorbert W. W. McCardle, G. Beetham, T. Maaon. The schedule of lands sold since.:last meeting was presented, 265 acres in Marigaone at an upset price of £3ll 15b 9d were applied for on deferrod payment by two settlers, and ±lls 11b lOd had been received on account. The plan of the towushjp of Hunterville near Marton, in the Ran»itikei district was laid upon the table, and the limits of the proposed town,'with reserves and of the suburban lands, were discussed. Mr Marchant proposed that 120 acr«s be sold as town lands for cash, 'and the remaining lands (b3O acres) sold oil deferrod payment as suburban lands. He said thatbuilding was going on rapidly, stores and houses beingingroatdemand. Mr Bunny thought that action should be deferred for a fortnight pending tile-probable changes.in the Land Bill now before Parliament, In answer to Mr Beetham, the Chairman said that the resolution withdrawing lands from cs.sh sale,' which had been recently passed, would' not apply to this case, Mr McCardle and Mr Bunny would like to see some of the lands offered on lease: Mr Marchant said that town lands could oilly be sold for cash, and suburban lands for cash or deferred payment. Mr McCardle thought that a special meeting of the Board should bo called to consider the proposed Land Bill now before Parliament, and to request permission, to makesuggestions to Governrne.it upon it, The Hunterville business could be discussed after the meeting. The Chairman said that it was possible to bringthe landsunderthe"villagesystem," which would pennitjeasing under certain conditions. Mr Bunny moved that Government be recommended to bring the lands under the. villago system of special settlements, and the resolution was seconded by Mr Beetham and carried. Mr McCardle moved that a special meeting be called to consider the proposed Land Act, and the Hunterville lands as well, He would suggest Tuesday next at 10 a.m. Mr Bunny seconded the motion, which was carried, A letter was read from the UnderSecretary of Crown Lands, stating that it was not considered desirable to alter the existing laws prohibiting deferred payment selectors who had assigned their interests from acquiring other deferred payment sections, Mr Bunny moved that a copy of the resolution and reply bo forwarded to Mr Beetham, M.H.R., in order that he may take action in the matter when the new Bill is before tho House of Representatives,—Carried. _ It was decided not to grant the application of P. G. Frasi for leave to cut timber on Crown Lands at Pahiatua. The ranger was instructed to take stops to preserve the timber in this locality. In answer to selector of sections 6 and 25, Blocks II and 111, Mangaone, it was decided to inform him that, his application to be permitted to exchange these sections for another leasehold section could riot be entertained. It was announced that the Governor had affirmed the resolution of the Board withdrawing all cash lands for 3- months. It was resolved that the Chairman at. once proceed with the reclassification of the land. Messrs Beard and Gray, of Masterfcon, wrote on behalf of the selector of section 23, Block VII, Mangaone, explaining why he applied for a deferred payment section after having assignod his interest in one formerly held by him. The matter was held over. It was resolved that the Mangatainoke Weßt, Waitapu, Hastwell's olearing, and other best available lands be dealt with by the Board in the ordinary manner. Mr Ileethsfm moved and Mr Fitzherbert seconded, That in view of the large demand for land in this district the Government be again recommended to increase the survey staff, and that a copy of the previous resolution and answer received be forwarded with the resolution. The meeting then adjourned until Tuesday next at 10 a,m.
