WOODVILLE SPECIAL SETTLEMENT ASSOCIATION.

. MAHGAHAO BLOCK, The following is the report of the exploring party, consisting of Messrs F. Harding. H. Walffer, R. Morgan, and W. Loveday ;—Wo see no reason to alter our report on the blqck, we w.ent up tho river about eight miles altogether and found one large creek and plenty. of smaller ones. There is a piece of totara bush be; lowthe terrace about two or three hundred acres in extent which is liable to floods, the said bush being about 7 miles off the river, we ako went back about 2 miles at a point abont five miles up the river but found no hills but about the same sort of timber and soil as before, On the second day we went in to the end of the old line and then started in a south-westerly direction and a westerly one as well, reaching hills in about two miles in both cases so we consider the flat ground is abut four miles deep back from the Mangahao river, the hills being low with long sloping sides, lightly timbered and well watered. There are a few patches of shingle on.the flat ground but none on the hills being about the same as the flat ground soil, We saw no heavy clayey soil in the block at all. ' •■ POKETOI BLOCK, We went up the river' about seven or eight miles the banks of which are very steep,' being about thirty or forty feet high and nearly upright, the land on the top being level for about $■ mile back, we crossed three large creeks, but it is almost impossible to get water, the banks being so high'and upright. The hills are almost bluffs of limestone, being very rough on the side facing tho Tiraumea river, but more sloping on the Manawatu side. The formation is sandstone with limestone on top in the hills, the flat land being of small extent and badly watered. Timber is generally light, and an ordinary bush of rata, rimu, pukatea, and tawa. There is a patch of totara on the Manawatu side iOf the block about half a mile wide, but there is none in the hills, there are a few patches of manuka at the Tiraumea river on very high ground—Examiner,
