CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor.

Sir,— I consider your leader of to-day (dated January 27), rather misleading, especially with regard to your statements that Mr Lowes challenged the opposition members to take a poll of the people on the question of a side school, but they prudently declined. I would just wish to point out that'the-oppositionists, as you are pleased to them, would willingly have agreed to this without the slightest fear of result, but while we were waiting the result of the poll the little game-of the opponents of the so-called opposition would have been quietly carried through, that Is, the £SOO-voted for extension of school accommodation in Masterton would have been expended in the extension of the present school, and the infant.school which we advocate and which the people have so emphatically declared is note urgently required, would have had to wait for another couple of years at least, But, sir, I cannot understand why we are to be termed oppositionists. Is it because we bad the audacity to come forward to compete with the past school committee who perhaps thought that their position entitled them to a life governorship of the school ? or is it because we are supposed to be opposed to the welfare of the children of Masterton? I am prepared to prove at any time that in the latter sense we are not oppositionists, but willing to unite with all the powers we possess for tho furtherance of the best interests • of the children. If, in doing so,,we do not further the interests of disinterested persons, we cannot help it. We must do our duty. That duty plainly is to endeavor to carry out the views of the people of Masterton and see that the monies voted for scltool'accommodatkm are not used in a manner detrimental to tho best interests of the children.

lam, &c, T. P, GIIIDWQpD, [Mr Girdwood and his friends are in opposition to the proposals of the late Committee, of the Education Board, and of the Inspector, for the extension of school accommodation in Masterton. -Ed.'W.D.]
