TARATAHI-CARTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Highway Board was held in the Council Chambers, Carterton, on Saturday, November 2iith, Present—Messrs B. Boys (chairman), H, Braithwaite, Reynolds, Grace, Parker, H. R. Bunny, Gallon, Dorset, and W. Booth. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a debit balance of £74 7s Id, . Correspondence, inwards, was read from Railway Department, and Public Works Department stating that the loan under the Roads aud Bridges Construction Act was granted. From Survey Department, Manawatu Road Board, and Messrs Braithwaite and Aycocks re deviation of road, From John Knight asking for extension of time. One month was granted, The Secretary informed the Board that as he had only had specifications for work to be done under the Roads ;and Bridges Construction Act, one week he had advertised for tenders to close next Saturday, therefore he had 'no tenders for this work to lay upon •the tabk ' Mr '£. P. Peny attended as 'speaker with a deputation asking how the road .from the.Hurunui Bridge.to the Waingawa river was to be paid for i and whether it was required. Mr Reynolds said that the question
of making the road had not been gone into but only surveyed.--Mr Perry wished to say that the deputation were.decidedly opposed to making this.road. /'• f Mr,H.R. Bunny thought this was not the time for-the question- of navine for the road.'.;, V _. Mr_Perry\then asked what was the intention of the Board regarding the road running'by Mr Taplin's. He would ask if it was a fact that the. Board had applied for a loan to make Hughes'lino. Mr Booth replied they had not only applied for a loan but had got it. ~ The Secretary informed -Mr Perry what land had come under special rating and that a- poll Had been advertised in the Observer. Mr Perry asked on behalf of Mr Raynerfor work to be done on Perry's line. ;•-■ • -■. ■ ' ... Mr Reynolds echoed the game old cry " No Funds." Mr Perry next said that he had been "PPtying for years to be relieved from overflow of water on land adjoining Mr Reynold's land;,, He had land there he wanted to cultivate, but could not do on account of the water, Mr Reynolds sad he'had just cleaned out the drain, and as the road was not blocking the water he "'could ; not accouht for the water being on; Mr Perry's land. ' \ O Mr Perry said it was a serious: matter and wanted help from theBoard.
■ Mr Booth suggested that it would save timo if Mr Perry would reduce his application to writing. Mr Perry thought as a deputation, they ought not to be asked to do this, They had come to lay their grievances before the Board, and thought they ought to be listsned to.
After considerable discussion the. Chairman ■ requested Mr Perry to' make formal application to the Warden,' and the matter no doubt would beattended to. '
Mr Perry thanked the Board for its. attention and retired, . ...
Accounts amounting./to £IOO 15s were passed for payment. Mr Braithwuite complained of the insufficiency of the'plans for work to be done under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, and that he could .find no peg, Mr H. Bunuy thought if the matter was referred to Mr King he would soon put it right, and as Mr King was likely to be in attendance that day the matter was left over, The Board went into Committee to strike a special rate to provide funds for loan under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. This concluded the business and the meeting adjourned.
