WAIRARAPA WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.

The statutory, meeting of the West County Council-was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday last. Presenters Booth, H. Bunny, H. R. Bunny, H. Braitwaite, Tally, Matthews, Buchanan, and J. Martin. ■ The returning officer reported the result of the triennial election.

Or H. Bunny proposed and Or Matthews seconded that Or Booth be reelected Chairman of the Council.— Carried unanimously. The following Committees were appointed. Works—H. R. Bunny, Buchanan, Martin, Tully and W, Booth. Finance Committee. H. Bunny, Braithwaite, and Matthews. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. Also former record of adjournment from Wednesday 26th to November 29th. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £lB5 4s 6d. The following correspondence wat' read from Audit Department forward':, ing balance sheet duly audited, From the Colonial Secretary, acknowledging' receipt of letters re nomination of values by local bodies. From Treasury Department advising remittance of, £7O to credit of County fund. I From' Wairarapa East County Council informing this Council that Mr King had resigned. From Beard and Gray with, particuavs relating to the leasing of the Hurunui Ferry Reserves, From & Tait asking for part of his loss £B6 on his contract to be refunded to him. 1 From Mr Bell asking for further ox*, tention of time to complete contract at Mavtinborough-Pahaua road and drawing attention to the necessity of having certain gates ereoted. From A. Douglas asking that two gates be ereoted in the Martinborough-Pahaua road to make it accessable to traffic, From Udy_.and Gallon asking for authority to lay,down tramway on. Moffult'a line. '.'.'*■ Moved by OrH. Bunny and Bacon-,, ded by Cr Buchanan, that application be made to the Public Works Department to know when sums applied for under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act will be available. Resolved—That Mr King be requested to supervise the works' of West County, and that the County take no steps further in the matter until they have heard further from County East. Some discussion ensued re the letter from Beard and Gray re the lease of the Hurunui Ferry Reserve, and Or F. Bunny moved, that Crs H. E. Bunny and Buchanan be a committee to act in this matter. Re Tait's letter asking for a refund of loss on the road from ■ Gladstone to Wainuioru, Cr H. Bunny thought it a bad precedent to allow these applications, as he thought that there was no chance of contractors in the event of making good profits, handing anything back. It was resolved that this application could not be entertained, It was moved by Or H. :Bunny and seconded by Cr Buchanan, that the Works Committee be empowered to deal with the obstruction under the Hurunui bridge. In answer to a letter, from John Bell asking for extension of time it was resolved that two months be granted. Re letter from Douglas and Bell, re erecting gates on Martinborough and Pahaua road, it was resolved that in addition to above resolution that in event of the Council 'granting Bell extension of time that he must ereot gates at a cost of £5, In reply to Messrs Udy and Gallon's

letter, re laying tramway on Moffatt's line, it was resolved that leave be granted on same terms as last npplica.fcion.

•.'Outward..correspondence was read as per letter book. Engineer's report was read discussed, and adopted. On the motion of Cr Matthews a committee consisting of Messrs Martin and Buchanan, was appointed to see what right the ferryman at the ferry toll had to claim toll from people passing over when the gate was closed.

Accounts amounting to £207 8s 8d were passed for payment.
