MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Urs Price, Heron, J. Williams, W. Perry, Johnston, and Hessey. Apologies were received from Crs Chamberlain, Caselberg, and Gapper, for. being, unavoidably absent. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and ,tlie correspondence outwards read,.. There was 110 correspondence inwards. j, . MR BENTLEY'S ACTION. -.:.. J A writ at tho suit of Mr Henry Bontley was read. Mr Bentley claimed. £2OO damages for wrongful dismissal.. The Mayor stated that the District Court did not sit at Masterton i til! Juno, and the matter could be postponed for a full meeting. . ''' : ■ . POUND RETURNS. ' : ' I ; The Poundkeeper reported the total amount received for horses and cattle impounded from Ihe Borough aid the Highway Districts as iG Bs. FINANCE COMMITTEE.. , ' The following accounts wero' passed for payment:—Wages, &c,,.£29 12s 3d; Burnett and Yule, £7 5a 2d; E, Toomath, £3 4s sd; E. McEwen, £<l6i, .i • Overdraft was reported at £S6i3 5a sd. , . ' I WOItKS COMMITTEE, ' : Tho Committee rcportod having met on Monday evening, when the Overseer : su{k mitted his report, which slated'he hti'l. enlarged the Cole street culvert; that the metalling of Railway lload would be completed about Tuesday, Tin' Committee resolved torecoimiiiud lint the Cfiuncil call tenders for 38 chains of Chapel street south, and five chains of Husiel street. The Committse reported that-Mr Parry ha<T signified his willingness to give half a chain: along his land to widen Chapel street,; the Council to orenfc au eight wiro fence along his frontage, Tho Committeo recommended that the Council accept Mr Perry's liberal offer, and ercot the foneeas required.
The report was adopted on tho motion of Or Heron, seconded ,by Cr Price, both Councillors speaking in grateful terms of Cr Perry's liberality in giving a half chain along his land in Chapel street for the widening of the rontl. • The Mayor stated that the contrast between Mr Renall and Or Perry iiy this matter was considerable,, l/ie former demanded £2OO, the lftttei) merely that a proper fence be erectec) along his boundary. '." | THE BLACK LIST, . ~ The-Town Cleric reported having given notice to several ratepayers iof the intention ot the Council to sue, ana that it had had the effect of catising many to pay up. He gave a list, of names; alphabetically, of those who had failed to comply with the notice, anct against whom he had issued summonses! The Mayor stated that £IOO had been the result of. the Council's action in the mutter, and he thought they had taken a step in the right .direction.; ! ...THE DOG NUISANCE. ' ' The Inspector asked-toVbe appointed Dog Registrar, with power, to take legal proceedings against' owners; of unregistered elogs. .• \ .•» The Clerk reported, that, ; only' 66 dogs had been registered this year, j : The Mayor moved that tho Inspector of Nuisances be appointed as' ah Assistant-Inspector at a payment' of twenty per-cent, on the fees collected! Also, that, the Inspector"at phW'giye in a list to the Town Clerk of "defaulters ''of dog tax. ' . In'reply .to Cr Ecssey, the, Mayor stated that no dogs in the borough/were exempt from the tax. The Council then adjourned.
