Messrs Chas. Pownail, & Co, scriveners,' Wellington, report: The money market remains unsettled, as notified in their last months quotations. Low rates art again ruling in tho homo country but supplies of capital offering here for mortgage investment, either from local or outside sources are limited, and difficulty has been found in placing soma few moderately large transactions at 'full curreut rates, viz., to 8 per cent, the higher quotation being more generally demanded, Tho depreciation in the price of wool—our present chief export—now lower in value than has been known in our oldest colonial experience, ia alone sufficient to account for tho ■ proiient financial position. The'contraction of the circulating medium -amounting annually by depreciation to about one million pounds sterling, creates a vacuum producing at present a heavy loss to the colony, bat of the ultimate result no fear need be entertained. Wool has been overgrown, and reduced in value from the simple cause of supply and demand, the former new rchug in considerable excess, and for that reason there is apparently little hope of any improvement in value but the frozen meat for exportation—still almost in its infancy, will soon make up tho wool deficiencies, for its true value must be realised, notwithstanding the usual opposition that has been displayed to all new ventures.
