MASTSETONv. OHMYTOWIf. " The third match 'between the above Clubs, this season was played in Greytown on Saturday and resulted in a win for tbo Masterton team by 12 runs on the first innings. The visitors arrived about II a.m., but a start was not made till about 12 o'clock.. Webster won the toss, from Harrison, and elected to go in first, Perry, Harrison, ' and Bethune bowled for Masterton, and disposed of their opponents for a total of 40 runs, the former trundler securing G wickets for 14. Nation made top score with; 8, Webster next with 7 not out. After an adjournment for lunch Masterton went in to 1 the bowling of Cuff and Judd, both of whom were well on, and made it very difficult to get runs, However, ; the visitors managed to tot up 52, McKenzie being principal contributor with 19, Bethuno and Perry coming next with 8 and 7 respectively. Cuff took 6 wickets and Judd 4. The fielding of tbo home team was very good, the longstopping of Hawke. being particularly noticeable, Greytown then went in for their second innings and after several changes in the bowling wero disposed of for 51, Perry again proving very effective, taking ,7 wickets for 11 runs. Cuff was the only one to get into double figures, with 11, Judd next with 8, ani Somerville 7. With 40 runs to get to win Masterton went in with every confidence, but their calculations wero completely upset by the splendid bowling of Cuff and Judd. Wicket after wicket went down without any perceptible difference in the score, and things were looking very blue for Masterton. McKenzie made a bit of a stand, and saw four of bis partners depart before he was smartly taken in the slips by Judd without scoring. The Greytown team were jubilant, while the spirits of the Mastertonions wero below zoro, and when the 9th wicket fell for 13, the game was thought to be practically over. However, Isitt and H. Elder got together, and runs began to come by degrees, both batsmen showing line form, playing the good balls and punishing anything at all loose. At this stage tbo excitement became intense, and it was really laughable to see the changes in the countenances of the opposing teams. While tlio faces of the home team began to lengthen those of the visitors broadened considerably as the point of victory was approached, and when the last rim required was obtained, the Masterton men nearly burst themselves cheering. As soon as the men left the field- the Greytown scorer disputed the scores, saying that his tally was one short of the number re- | quired. Rather than have any un- ■ pleasantness over the matter Harrison said he would alter the Masterton score to agree with that of Greytown, 1 and asked Webster to continue the game, but the latter positively refused to take his men into the field again, and the match was consequently decided in favor of Masterton by 12 runs on the first innings.
