The chairman said: a poll had ; been tak&i under tho\R<iads '.and .Bridges' Construction Act for a loan-, of £696 on a previous occasion, but the rote was against it. He asked 1 whether they had since then changed their minds. • ■ v
Mr H,. Aulin said, lie believed they The Chairman said' if that was the case ho believed it would be necessary for the applicants to defray ; the expenses connected with'' the previous poll before the Board would be justified in repeating the experiment and risking another failuro. r/: 1
Mr Auliri; wanted to know why the West Mauriceville roads had been so neglected.
The Chairman said the total rates from Mauriceville only amounted to £3O per.year, and Mauriceville West only contributed! about bntfifth of this amount. ' Had previous notice of this deputation been given ho would have been. in a position to furnish figures shewing how the rates had been expended. The special rate required for the loan would come to LG3 a year for fifteen years, and he asked the deputation whether .tlioy would be prepared to -liaye their rates: raised from L3O to L 93 per year.,'
Mr Aulin asked how • touch this would amount to for each section. Tho Chairman informed liim that it would be necessary to have ato .'estimate prepared. The ratepayers would have the information they desired, and it would then be for them to consider whether they would undertako the responsibility. ■ ; ' Or Macquarie said tho rates would be raised to 5d in the £ if the proposed loan was carried.' The deputation then thanked the Board and withdrew, RANGITUMAU KOAD, Messrs Stuckey and McLachlan, sen. presented a petition to the: Board from the settlers of Rangitumau, asking for a fresb poll. to be taken for the terminus of the present . Rangitumau road to tho river., This : would reduce, the loan from LIBSO to LIOOO, and several of the objectors would be excluded froni tho rateable area. ; The Chairman said the question was in the, absence of certain members of the Board they should deal ! with the matter. He thought it would be. better to wait for a larger meeting. ; ilr Stuckey had no doubt that the poll would be carried this time in favor df the loan. '• The Chairman reminded Mr Stuckey that he bad giyen a guarantee that ho would pay the expenses of the first P olL .:'. ■' " .. Mr Stuckey said he had;only guaranteed Mr Bremner's expenses in connection with visiting the locality and inspecting the proposed road. . The Chairman drew attention to the fact that deputations wero constantly complaining that they .got no money spent in their ward. In the present instance there was a loss of £26 4s 2d in connection with this proposed road, which tho Board had nothing to show for. ' • Mr Stuckey thought the information i would be made übo of in the future and found valuable.: • The Clerk read a statement shewing ■ tliat on tho Rangitumau road £472 7s 6d had been expended. • Rates from that locality' only amounted to £2ll lis 5(1, leaving a debit balance of £lO9 19s 9d. SPECIAL RATE. Messrs Holmes Bro3, waited on the Board, wishing to know if the Special rate on- No 3 Ward could not be defrayed out of the money in; hand : from the general rate, which at present has a credit balance of £263 lis Bd, exclusive of contracts in hand.. . .They were requested; to send , application in writing;to; next, meeting of the Board.

Donald waited on the Board with reference to tho ditches on this road, which were choked with watercress and weeds, and overflowed, the land and road. There was about; 260 chains required cleaning out, and the settlers interested;, would -contributor : tcwards the expense." ; They were' requested to make an application to the. next meeting,. stating ■ their' offer,' and' in the meantime the Clerk was requested to write to the Masterton Borough' Cpncil.and ascertain what wards the work.' ' '~ '
Mr Donovan waited on the Board
and informed them that the gates they ordered to be put up had not been done, He also wished to know whether ho hada right to go through Mr Mackay's property. ; ( The Chairman said that arrangements had been made' "with. Mr Mackay, and he hoped they would meet with Mr Donovan's views,
