MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

O The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, having been adjourned from tho usual date as falling on New Year's night, Presenters Gapper (in the chair), Heron, Hcssey, Chamberlain, Perry, and Williams. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Lowes), The minutes were confirmed and correspondence read, rOUND RETURNS. Mr Croad reported tho receipt of £1 4s in fees for the past fortnight. . ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed: 'J'oomath, i 3 19s 7d; Wood, ss. WORKS COMMITTEE, The Committee recommended tho sliiice gates be painted white, that Railway road bo repaired, and that the overseer be instructed to clear out all creeks where the seven days' notice had expired, at the expense of the owners.—The report was adopted. BYLAWS. The committee recommended a bylaw for adoption regulating the duties of the nightsoil contractor, and making it compulsory to employ the same by residents in Queen, Chapel, Dixon, and Cole street and in all houses within fifty feet of each other in any part of tho borough. The by-law also included regulations for the due carrying out of the above, and also for removing ashes, rubbish, die,, from any place on receiving notice in writing to do so. Tho recommendation was adopted and tenders ordered to be called for the nightsoil contract, to close at the next meeting. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Mayor was appointed chairman of the Finance Committee, THE POUNDKEEPER QUESTION. Cr Williams moved, pursuant to notice, that before a new poundkeeper be appointed the late pouudkeeper's dismissal be re-considered, and fresh evidence taken, Cr Perry seconded pro forma.—The motion was lost.. The consideration of the applications for the office of poundkeeper was held over till next meeting, fresh offers to be received in the meantime. It was resolved to apply to the Town Lands Trust for a lease of the 1 land adjoining the pound as a paddock for running impounded animals in, The Council then adjourned.
