♦ CARTERTON-TARATAHIRACES. The following nominations and entries were received on Wednesday night for the Oarterton-Tarafcahi races on 9th November : ' HURDLE HANDICAP. Septimus, Kohai, Peter, Liability, Juliet, Fountain Deer. cup HANDICAP. Ninette, The Field, Satellite, Romp, Miss Danebury, Administrator, Fleetwood, TeWhiti, Saturn. STAXES, W.F.A, Kakapo, Ninette, Mountain Deer, Tawa, Satellite, The Field, Fleetwood. MAIDEN, W.F.A. Jester, Saturn. THE COMING SPRING MEETING AT TAUHERENIKAU.

' [byouk special.] The Tauhereuikau race course was never in such good order as at present; and any owner grumbling at the gallop that has been provided for them outside the track must be indeed hard to please. It will be remembered that the wet weather last season rendered the plough track impossible to work; upon, and a course was left open all round the outside, of tho course proper. The large amount of work done.on it when so soft left many holes and necessitated another top dressing. During the past six weeks this has been done, and the- result has been very satisfactory. The sod walls for the steeplechase, are completed, and the clay for puddling is at the water jump ready to be used when the weather permits. This jump has been made opposite the grand staud, so that instead of the steeplechasers racing down the straight at starting they will start on the plough track, the water being the first obstacle to claim' attention,, and with a three foot wall on the take : offside will take some negotiating, being sixteen feet wide. Still, there are those who are ready to take short odds that the majority get safely over. However, it will be a splendid jump, and can be easily seen from all parts, but especially from the stand, After the water there is a hurdle, and thena sod wall, with a four foot ditch on each side. The wall is four feet

high, and at its base measures six feet, so that the jump itself is fourteen feet. This wall is.placed on tho inside of the course, by tho bush. As they raca 'along the river side there is another hurdle, before they face the second sod wall, which has been built outside the course, at the turn from the river. From there they go due east, a post and rail fence and then a gorse fence having to be crossed before Mr Dudding's paddocks are reached, when the course is to tho south, over some more timber, a hurdle, and then the second

.gorse'hedge bars the way, to jump which they wheel to the westward, and land on the course below the horaeyards, From thence the way is across thefirst sod wa.ll.out on lo the course proper, over the second wall, and home, finishing down the straight. ■ As near as I could ascertain this is the course as described, and even from this bare description few will be found to say that,it is not a steeplechase course, every inch of it, and one that will tako the best ot those engaged all their time to do properly. Until the acceptances are made it is idle to speculate on how many will start or what will win ) but amongst intending acceptors I may mention that "Buckett" intends having a " buck" at it with Kohai, and if the water does not frighten the Maori horse, ho will, bar aciidents, be a long way in at the finish. Mountain Deer

is another probable candidate, and report says he is in splendid condition, aB also is bis stable companion, Miss Danebury, who is spoken of asone of the most improved two-year-olds in the district. If either of them can only get home first in the Steeplechase or Cup, what a cheer there will be for the popular owner, of the black jacket and red cap. Mr Freeth is amongst us again from Blenheim, and has with him The Field and Greyhound. The former is an old acquaintance, and her genuine gameness has made friends for her in this district. Greyhound is her half brother, being by. Opawa-Lady Jane, and hia coming to carry Bst 121b when his owner knows we keep something that cm race a bit is proof enough that he is not to be passed by easily. I had not time to go across to Fcathorston, where.Mr Freeth is staying and. can only say that The' Field

is reported to be verywell and Greyhound a trifle big. If the little mare can once more show/usher heels, Let owner knows from experience that Wairarapa can take a beating fairly, and rejoice with the conqueror. Mr Grace moves to Tauherenikau next waek, so also does Mr Strang with Ninette. Albert Lyibrd courteously shewed, me his team out, and.l must teave any remarks for another, time.
