MASTERTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.

The annual exarainatipn of the Mas : terton .Public School was concluded yesterday afternoon. Below we givo ■tho result' of the passes in the several standards.

.'■#r Lee, the...inspector, before dis,n|is3ing',tlie children,, spoke in the .fflpfing terms:-<' I am much pleased to find-that the'work of the school is sound and good throughout, some ef it is more than'ivsll, : being a .good deal above the I 'average.'' The school is better this year than last, inasmuch as •the Work of the fifth and sixth standards this year is strong in all the sections. Besides this the work of the thirdstandard is also very commendable, being remarkably good in all leading .subjects. The reading is good in it as it is in all the other standards, and the arithmetis .and writing is excellent. The first two standards areas in former years good, nearly all the children in them passing. I am pleased to find a school in the position which this one occupies doing such good work in the fifth and sixth, standards. The work was strong,,and.that even in the weakest of the pupils was good, The Btrong weve very strong and'the weaker were stronger than they, thought they were. I am glad to find' in the two higher standards that English grammar, Which in the pass has been the weakest '. subject, is now much improved. As.a whole the: papers on this subject are freefromihetrashiness' so orM 1 met with. The ; bath fifth and sixth Btandards.ia goodjbd the spelling, i'mpvedi' .The writing in the third standard is very.good,'being better than that in the, fourth; 'The general answers of the fifth; and' sixth standard pupils were good, andtheir answers'to historical questions very creditable, : I

'was very much pleased with both the geography and these stan'tixt&ll trust | you .war. endeavor to k«fep up jn these subjects, ;> Some years ago!cornmended the reading jnithe school, and IW gratified to ; 'find /that it has kept this up,' I don't wish you to be over confident as to the results of next.year, but I would like you to go away with the feeling that you Lave gained somef sort of "kudos" for your school. r I may say.with respect to the fourth'standard"that it'is the mo3t difficult one to prepare, and that on the whole the' work in' it has been done fairly well. In the fifth standard there was a weakness in' arithmetic. The English class books are, however, in some respects unsuited to the colony treatingofmeasurements suchasells and furlongs, which are not used in New Zealand. Had the standard been familiar with the' measurements in common, use here they would have cleared the paper. The school < was then dismissed, the head master at the request of the inspector, giving a holiday to the children on Monday next. Mr Boddington the Chairman, and two other members of the Committee were present, and had the pleasure of listening to some very excellent recitations, given by the pupils of the higher, standards,
