MASTERTON SWIMMING CLUB.
The first annual meeting of the above Club was held, last evening, when, owing no doubt to the very unpleasant weather, only a small number of members attended. Mr C. S. K. De Castro was voted to the chair, and the Secretary read the report of the first swimming * tournament under the auspices of the Clubasjollows ;
Your committee have the" satisiaction of reporting that the tournament as arranged for in January last, and whioh took plaoe on the 14th of February, was an unqualified success. Fully. 600 spectators assombled to. witness the sports, including, a very large proportion of ladiea,- for whose convenience an awning had been erected and seats provided near the.water's edge, There was a large number Of competitors, and vory good swimming'and diving wis displayed by most of them. Prizes were provided out of aeniberßl subscriptions, entrance fees, andsubsoriptions by the general public; the whole amounting to r !20125. Of this sum £l4 11a went in prize money, 7s 5d remains in hand, and the balance in expenses, There were eighteen eventi, and all Were competed for. VVe would ' suggest, howeter, that on future occasions the number of events be feduoed, as they occupied too much time to be conveniently taken in one afternoon. The thanks of the Olub are.due to those who liWly subtcribed prizes either io goods, and alio to those members of thefy Committee who worked so hard to' make the affair a success, particularly to Messrs Jago, Cross, Maxton and Wiokorsori j the first-named also providing timber, trestles and* labor His Worship the Mayor acted as timekeeper, the President and Vice-President as judges, Mr Elkins as starter, and Messrs DcOastro, Hogg and Elkins as handioappers, The subscription list and balance sheet we're also read,' and the report was adopted unanimously,. The election of officers was then proceeded with, arid resulted,as follows:—President, MrW. H. Beetham (re-elected) j Vice-President, Mr A. R. • Bunny (re-elected); Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. Thompson, (Mr Roydhouse, the late secretary, declining to stand); Timekeeper, Mr A. Bish: Starter, Mr Elkins; Handicappers, Messrs DeCastro, Elkins and Hogg; Committee, Messrs DoCastro, P. O'Connor, T. E. Chamberlain, M. Maxton, A, Elkins, 0, Hounslow, T. Jago, and S. H. Wiokerson.
Unanimous votes of thanks were then accorded to Messrs Jago, Wicker* son, Maxton, and Cross for the time and labor they devoted to preparing the baths for the last competition, to Mr W. P. Eoydhouse, the. retiring secretary, and to .the ladies, who.by their presence and support contributed in no small degree to the sufceeas of the tournament. It was.resolved that the Cfommittes bring upjhe rules for consideration fiud adoption,'at a general meeting of members, and at the same time to present a programme of. the proposed doings of the Club for the ensuing season, the meeting to be called In a month's time. . Tho meeting then adjourned;
