(to the editor,) ■ Sir,—Mr Hawkins, is deserving' of every praise for the outspoken way in which he drew attention to the evils and abuses of the New Zealand system of government. Had he gone a step farther and pointed out in what way a remedy could be provided he would have earned the gratitude of colonists, It is plain that at the present time the modus operandi of tho Settlers' Asso-'. ■ ciation is not understood: .people, fail to see how it is to work out their redemption, whether as a Chamber of Commerce or a Reform Club. There is no doubt the Association is viewed by a number of people with a certain; amount of suspicion, the prevalent idea being that as the Government is collectively bad its individual and supporters must be essentially bad. or incompetent, and the Association will have to assist in infusing now and incorrupt blood to that august assemr. blage. Others again regard the \ Association as a.debating society on a > ; large scale'with large ideas, and chance Of giving effect to'them". tion of delegates is being effected, and the limitation of candidates to those who, possibly, being behind the scenes, had giveiun their names as lumbers before the'settlers generally hadi an explanation of the .Association's objects 4c, botokenj a fpreordina'tion of the board of delegates.
