The Masterton Foresters hold their September summoned meeting to morrow evening at 8 o'clock.

Lieut. Francis and Private Hillier, of the Wellington detachment of the Salvation Army are at present staying in Masterton. We understand the Lieut, during his sojourn in the Empire City has devoted himself so aasiduouslj to the duties of his office that his health has been seriously impaired thereby, rendering a change of air neoessary to reoruit it again, hence his visit to Masterton. Although on a health recruiting tour he is collecting information as to the buildings suitable for their services and the terms they can be obtained for, with a view to opening a depot at Mastertou at an early date,

On Tuesday evening last the sum of £l4B were collected by the " Canary." system at the Salvation meeting in the Apollo Hall Wellington, Canaries m-h a kind of promissory note form, prints! nn yellow paper which are distributed among the audience, to be filled in for the amount they intend giving. On the strength of lust Thursdays promises, the Army have purchased the nine years lease of the A| olio Hall, and are going to spend about £SOO in improving the building.

The complimentary concert to Mrs Shannon by lady and gentlemen amateurs at Greytown 011 Monday evening lust was moat successful. The Foresters' Hall where it was held was comfortably filled, there beintf not less than 300 persona present from all parts of the distriot, The programme was a very good one; comprising songs from ladies and gentlemen from Mnstorton, Featheraton, and Greytown. The Greytown Private Brass Band gave some excellent selections before the concert and during the interval, The concert, was opened by a well played overture " Qui Vive" by Mrs Shannon and Miss Valentine The song " True Blue was fairly well given by Mr McFarlane, the same gentleman giving in the second par. "Tho mill wheel," in which he was more successful " The lost chord," by Mrs J. D. Cox, did not seem to go very well for some reason, but the song " Let Me Dream Again" by the same lady in tho second part was given with very good effect. Mr Toogood sang fairly well in " Yonth and Age," and Mr Eapp was encored for his comic song " Drink Puppy Drink," and gave in response " Smiling Tom," which seemed to take even (better with the audience than the former. He also sang in the second part "I Can't Make it Out Can Can You," Mr Briscoe then appeared on the stage, and must have felt extremely complimented by the greeting of rapturous (?) applause whioh he received,! He sang " Sweet Spirit hear my Prayer," and had to appear in answer to an. encore (!). The same success marked his sonu in the second part, " Ever of Thee." Mrß Shannon gave with very good effect "Swallow, swallow," and was encored, Messrs Oakley and McLaren gave a dialogue from Henry VIE, in which both gentlemen seemed at home, Mr Stevenson received a well merited encore for his song " My Queen," and responded with what we considered the gem of the evening, " Love Has Byes," The popular favorite in the comic line Mr MoLaren then made his appearance in "Millionaire," but would not answer to an enoare. Mr Gray Bang two songs the one in the first part being " True to the last," and in the second part " The Stirrup Cup" both being very well rendered, A duet by Mesdames Shannon and Cox" Oh may'st thou dream of me," was excellently well given and was loudly applauded. The first part waa brought to a conclusion by a comio duet by Mrs Shannon and Mr McLaren " The Happy Policeman," The second part opened with a pianoforte duet by Mrs Shannon and one of her pupils, Miss M, Bennett, and was followed by a song and ohorus " Sleep, Sleep," Mrs Shannon was again very successful in " The Anchor's weighed," and had to reappear. Mr MoLaren fetched the house down again in a comio song," Dear littlo innocent things." All the performers then joined in singing " God save the Queen," which brought a most successful evening to a close. Some lads who would like to think themselves men, behaved in a most disgraceful manner while one of ths ladies were singing. Their names/are known, and we understand that they will! hear further of tho mattei,

The match between the Wellington City Rifles r Masterton Bifles commenced »i 3 o'clock tbia morning. At 200 yards range which was completed at 9,80, Masi erton was one point; 1 behind.

We hear that the unsold sections at Pahiatua offered at Masteiton a fortnight ago by Mr Bogle have 'been cleared by auction at Napier at prices ranging from £45 to £GB per aore. . An influential requisition is now being signed, asking Mr W. Lowes to come forward as a candidate for the mayoralty of Masterton. Should he acsede to the requeal, his return may be regarded as assured. Mr Bish lias, we understand, decided not to come forward for re-elec-tion.

We understand that the finest man in the Wellington police force- -Constable Leahy, of Masterton—has beoome a Benedict, He is universally popular in this district and will be overwhelmed with good wishes,

Messrs E. Brown & Co advertise for sale a nice property of llf acres of fint class land, two acres orchard, the rest grass, with five roomed cottage, sheds, outbuildings, &o, The Wairarapa Football Clubs have been notified by the Union that the season must olose on Saturday next, and requesting them to draw as to which i earn will play the flnal tie with the Wellington. The Masterton Club, in the face oi the fact that a number of itß team would not be able to go to Wellington, has decided to give precedence to Greytown, who will no doubt give a good account of themselves against their Wellington opponents. We wish them sucCek..

We direct the attention of farmers and all interested in agricultural machinery to Messrs John Duthie and Co.'s advertisement of mowers, reapers, and binders, etc., which they ka?e just- landed ex Wave Queen. The list includes:—Samuel* son's " Gem" and (P.) mowing machines; Samuelson's (P.) balance draught reapers and mowers, specially altered to reap nine inches high; '• Harvest Queen" self raking reapers; "Highland" manual delivery reapers, arranged to cut specially high,; Hornsby's "patent four-arm and two-horse " Indispgtmble" self raker reaper, with composite road wheel and. two knives five feet cut; Howard's Anglo-American liowe hay rakes; Samuel, aim's prize string binding reapers (this machine combines all the latest improvements in string binders, with the superiority of English machinery); and a variety of lawn mowers, We were right in anticipation that " The Pirates of Penzance" would prove mure popular and attractive than, the " Grand Duchess of Gerolstein," Publio opinion last evening was unanimous in favor of the former. It was played by tha juveniles with more spirit and animation than the previous piece, and the repeated and hearty enoores proved that tho large audience thoroughly enjoyed it, Wo feel sure that " The Pirates," if repeated a second night; would be a Success. Everyone last evening was pleased with the bright, sparkling music; tho effective scenery, the gay and appro priate costumes, and the clever acting and singing. The songs throughout the play were heartily encored. Ruth's flong as rendered by Miss Lizzie Kirkness was most effective. Master E, Esmond scored a success with the wellknown Pirate King's Beng. Miss Amy Oliilds deserved credit fur Frederic's song, and the clear ringing voioe of MiBS Amelia Hodge in Mabel's beautiful song, •' Poor Wandering One" was perhaps tbe gem of the evening. It was a marvel to hear tiny Dolly Inman render the olevor and diffioult Major General's song without a fault. The Sergeant's song went capitally, and the genuine acting of Master W, Drisooll in this rolfi brought down the house repeatedly. This particu lar opera is full of pretty and oharming scenes, and tbey were well reproduced on the Maatertonstage last evening. To-night " Lea doolies de Oorneville" is to be presented by request. On the occasion of the former visit of this talented Company to Masterton this proved to be the favorite pieoe with the publio, and it is, in consequence of this general desire expressed for its repetition, that it is to be played for a second and last time tonight.

John Pritcher was fined ten shillings for drunkenness this morning by hit Worship the Mayor, with the alternative of forty eight hours. Notice is given in another column that any person removing gravel from Beotion 45, Bentleys' estate will be proseouted. We have to acknowledge to receipt from the Government printer of the statutes passed during the lato session.

The New Zealand Timos appears to-day in an enlarged form, The Herald's Woodville correspondent writes that in sinking a well at "Woodville the borer brought up broken quartz containing gold. Steps are to be taken to test tho value of the discovery, It will be seen by our telegraphio, report of the Education Board's meeting to-day that a new school is to be built at Tinui, that applications are to be invited for the office of pupil teacher in the Mas> tartoit school, and that additions are to be made to the Kaitara school. The|regulationa drafted by Messrs Lee and Grundy for the conduct of the Masterton High School were adopted, We referred yesterday to the laches of the Government in the mattor 'of the Industrial Insurance branch. The ifollowing has been given to us as the official explanation of the matter" The Government are not putting a pressure on polioy holders in the Industrial Branch of the Life Assurance Department to take a " cash" surrender value for their policies, but are endeavoring to induoe them to invest the surrender, yalue in more favorable tables, Failing this the Government areprepared, we understand, to make a refund of the full amount paid in." This, we suppose, means that the Government pressure is an indirect one, the object being to termioato an engagement which it is not prepared to carry out, As far as we can learn the conduct of the department in this matter has been thoroughly despicable.
