WAIRARAPA LOAN ASSOCIATION.

The following extremely satisfactory ropott will bo presented to-day by the Directors of the Permanent Investment and Loan Association at the annual meet' ingin Greytown;—" In predentin? the annual report, the Directors aire again pleased to state that the operations have been quite up to those of former years, the nett profit divisible nmongat shareholders being somo 2a 3d per shave more than last balance, which your Directors jthink may be coifißidered; very Batisfaotory. During tho'peno'd'linder review th& first series of shares have attained their majority, and owing to the-ra'eaaures taken some twe and & half years ago to gradually pay the then value of original shares to those

willing to accept payment, the amount payable whb gradually reduced until the sum to be provided was brought to with-1 ill such limita'that thb Direotora ;had no ; ' diffioulty in-arranging for: ita ipayment. The number of original shares !y/ast42o, in liquidation of which'the Aflaooiation haa paid jg1.6,501 19b 4d, during the last two_and a half years, and that without restraining the ordinary bnsineas of the Association or obtaining outside accomodation other than a moderate amount of deposits in the ordinary oouiae of business and which are only; of a temporary charaoter. Your directors therefore consider that tho Association may be congratulated upon having, overcome what atono time seemed to present a serious difficulty, viz, how to provide for ! original shires, so many of which be | came due at the same tiino, without having to accumulate funds and so lock up capital in. investments of a temporary character, that could only be expeoted to bear a small rate of iutorest and so seriously reduce the profits of the Assooiolion. The rate of interest earned on original shares for the whole term has been within a fraction of 14 per cent. During tho year Mr J, Suodgrass has retired from the directory owing to his leaving the .district, and Mr F. W. It. Seed was provisionally appointed by the Directors to fill the vacancy, which appointment requires confirmation of shareholders. In accordance with rules, Messrs Booth and Oaselberg retire from the Directory, but are eligible for reelection,

Wo regret to rocord a sorious ncoidout to Mr Henry Vallanoe, one of the newly appoiutod Inspectors in tho Sheep and Babbit Deportment of ibis district, Yea torday morning he rode over to Mr Wurdoll's station at Te Whiti where it appears his horse reared and fell on him inflicting severe internal injuries on its rider. A brako was sent from Masterton whioh couvoyod tho sufferer carefully to the family residence on tho Upper Plaiu. To day wo learn that Mr Yallanco IB a little better, but as yet it is not passible to accurately guago the extent of the injury

A Waimato correspondent writes to us as follows:—A vast quantity of grain was injurod by the late rains, and tho prices ruling are very low: oats about Is 4d and wheat 3s 6d; if at all injured, only about 2s, Tho farmers are not by their want of success last season, li it are again sowing vast areas. DrGrabham, the Inspector of Hospitals, visited' tho Greytown Hospitial on 14th December last, In his ■ report on the subject he remarks that the kitchen ought to have a range and boilor providod. ; He reports that the food was good, and the bed linen clean, but adds:—" In tho "rounds of the hospital are two immigrant cotiages, each containing three small rooms, Ono of those is used as a laundry, bath room, and store room, and was found to be very dirty and untidy. The other coltago can be utilized as afovor-hoapitial, and has been occupied for ten months by a Maroi boy, who has a severe gunshot in the knee. His whole family seem to have taken up their residence there, and havo made the place, together with the laundry, very filthy. They have aho placed three pigs in an empty sty at' the baok. Besides the Maori boy there!was only one in patient at the date of my visit. This was a man with a fracture of the spine. He had no complaint to make but of the bedding and feared he would get . bed-sores, .The Steward and Matron have not held office three months, and therefore some allowance may bo made for the slovenly appearance of the hospital and its belongings, They assured me, it was much worse when they first arrived; I recommand that a kitchen-range and boiler be provided j that tho exterior of the building be painted ;and that a hotter kind of bedding be produced, at least for severe casos."

The sale will close on Saturday,—Advt. We havo every reason to believe that Mastorton before many years will be ono of the most flourishing inland townships in New Zealand. The population is rapidly increasing every day, and property in the township and surrounding districts now commands snund advanced prices. Large tracts of country which have been laying waste for many years, have now been bought up, and in many cases holders could realise a small fortune on their property if inclined to Bell, The principal drapery establishment in Mas' terton is the Hall of Commerce, situated exactly opposite the Club Hotel, This establishment has become quite a favorito house with the public generally, not only on account of it holding the largest and bust assorted stock in; the Wairarapa, but more especially because .ladies. : and gentlemen visiting the Hall of Commerce find that thsy can purchase" the very latest novelties in fashionable drapery, millinery, and clothing We draw special attention to G.W.Schroder's advertisement on the front page of, this.paper.— Advt, "; ;;", t A Men's Trousers and Veatßi from 7a 6d per pair, at the Emporium. ; Ironmongery,'Qrooery, Oil and Colors, I at Wellington prices, at Rapp & Hare's. -[Advt,

More than a dozen previous cnnviotions are on record against both of them, and the sooner the; are placed under the care of Micaiah Bead, the bettor. He gives his opinion in favor of L. J, Hooper & Co,, of the Bon Marche Warehouse, who, he states, has a larger and better stock to choose from than any country store in New Zealand, and fit for any town in the colony.—Advt.
