The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, JULY 10, 1883. MEAT EXPORT.
The importance to this district of the Meat Export Traffic, is a sufficient apology for our again recurring to a ' subject to which we have already devoted much of our space. At the ; late meeting, settlers were reminded J of the readiness with which Canterbury and Otago had responded to calls made upon them for capital to work this in- ' dustry, and were indirectly reproached j for not coming forward with equal , alacrity to support their own Company, Jt is only fair, however, to point out that tho pastoral of Canterbury and Otago and their facilities for transport, are far in advance of our own, The advantages they enjoy over us added to the consideration that town and Country in the Sontli work hand in hand together, quite account for Canterbury raising £40,000 against the £12,000 subscribed in the Wellington provincial district. It is, however, abundantly evident that we could have raised more at home than we have done. The canvass now being made could have commenced twelve months ago, and the City of Wellington included in the field of operations. Ono of tho directors of the Company has admitted that shares could be readily placed in Wellington,' and as we suggested yesterday, there is no satisfactory reason why they should not be issued there. Wellington fc the headquarters of the company. Its official and working staff reside there, and all the money raised so far has been expended there. Under these circumstances tho directors have a strong claim for the support of Wellington residents, but as we understand the matter they will not advance it for fear of country settlers losing the conof its affairs. The object of country settlers is of course to get freezing and shipping chaiges at as low a rate as possible. If they save on these it is immaterial to them whether the company pays them a dividend on their shares. The indirect profit is greater than the direct one, and as a matter of course they give it the preference. A policy of this kind pushed too far would be fatal to the growth and extension of the corcpany, as it would mean that the company's shares would have no market value, and that its credit in tho monoy market would stand at zero, It'was for that reason that we advocated yesterday a stronger union between town and country. It is true that the town directors fixed the charges on the.Lady Jocelyn's cargo at too high a rate, but it is ■• understoodthat this mistake will not be repeated. The action of the town directors, though somewhat injudicious from its going too far, was in the direction of strengthening the Company by creating profits, It is evident to us that the success of the Company depends upon town as well as country control, and that it, would be a grave error for either one or the other to be clearly in the ascendant, We hope to see Wellington contributing a larger proportion of capital for working the 1 business than it does at present, and we are not at all afraid of Wellington representation at the Board proving in the long run other than beneficial to the interests of both town and country. We do not believe that country settlers in the Wairarapa , can find all the money necesi sary for the success of the Company, i Nor do we consider that the present 1 nominal capital of £20,000 will be , adequate for the work which the com- . pany may, if it thinks proper, take in 1 hand. For these reasons it stems to us that the sooner an active canvass fcr shares in the City of Wellington the better it will be for everybody interested in meat export,
