It is stated on good authority that James Carey has left Ireland. Up to the present time no reward has been given him for having turned informer in tho Phoenix Park trials, and he has never beon pardoned for complicity in the murders of tho lato Lord F. Caven, dish and Mr Burke, ROME, July 8. Much consternation is felt at the Italian seaports and throughout tho country generally at the rapid spread of the cholera in Egypt, and fears are entertained that the epidemic may be introduced by vessels arriving via tho Suez Canal. The populace at Brindisi have avowed their intention of preventing passengers or mails from Egypt being landed at that port, and on the arrival of the P. and 0, steamship Surat to-day refused to allow the overland mails to be brought ashore. Per Merchant Shipping and Underwriters' Association:—London, July 7: Arrived Ships Philomene, from Lyttelton (March 30); and Gareloch, from Lyttelton (April 5). MELBOURNE, this day. Received July 10, 12,30 p.m.-'lhe Hon, Mr Service, Premier, has received a cablegram from tho AgentGeneral, at London, stating that public opinion in England is favorable to the establishment of a protectorate over New Guinea and the New Hebrides. Mr Murray Smith suggests that the Colonies should make further collective proposals to the Imperial Government, offering to pay a share of the expenses of establishing a protectorate.
