The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 17, 1882.
Mr Coleman. Phillips has re-asserted; in the columns of our •'contjinpbrary:.' his claim to the support of the three' Lower Valley members in hia late candidature for the office of County Chairman. In evidence of this he, publishes a private letter and refers to a private communication. If we felt ourselves to be also at liberty to make private references of such a character wo could .at once show that Mr Phillips is laboring under a sad hallucination. We must, however, decline to go outside what took place in the Council Chambers, or may emanate directly from the three gentlemen referred to. At the late Council meeting one of the three named spoke in favor of Mr Booth as County Chairman, a second censured MrPnuMPS in very direct terms, and a third was silent. Mr Phillips can easily, set, himself right if lie rejects tliii' palpable testimony' by : a'. .direct referenceto his colleagues, Mr Donald, one of the three, for example, is from' length of service the senior member of the Council, and is a man who nas the coinage of his convictions,' If Mr. Phillips can obtain a direct assurance from Mr Donald "that in the event of there having been a fair chance of Mr Phillips being elected Mr Donald wbiild have given him his vote" we will admit that we have been in the wrong, and that Mr Phillips was in the right, In the meanwhilo we-adhere to our original opinion that Mr Phillips had not the support of the three Lower Valley members. He may have had the partial confidence of one of them, but one is.not three, and we object to it being taken to mean that number.
