[To the Editor of the Wairarapa Daily.] Masterton, Oct. 1,1881. Sir,—Having directed tho attention of the Borough Council (by letter) to the unsatisfactory state of some of the work passed by the Works Committee, and also forwarded a specimen of the gravel used on the footpaths, I was not awar« until to-night what action had been taken in the oatter, I see by the report in your paper of the 28th iilt. that the letter is to be referred back to me-for what purpose or reason I know not. I have not yet received the letter or I would send you a copy so that the public might judge whether I was justified in the action I have taken. It seems to me that some of the councilors, instead of questioning or trying to refute my assertious, have descended to -vile language and insinuations unbecoming men placed m theso responsible positions by the ratepayers of the Borough. If I remember rightly, I asserted—lst, the level of the street is not earned out according to the plan; 2nd, the footpaths are not gravelled according to specification; 3rd, metal on whole ot street not according to specification, and would not he allowed on public roads. If these assertions aro true, and the work has been so passed by. the Works Committee, tnen I say the sooner a fresh Works Committee is appointed the better for the Borough; and I think from the specimen oi gravel produced and the evidence of Or Price, who declared that the wliole work had been done in a most unsatisfactory manner; my assertions have been fully proved ' ■ . , Not to trespass too much upon your valuable space, Twill merely note one or two of the unfounded assertions and in. smuations. Cr Dixon must have been fusing his bwribiisheU/to measure my .corn" yvhen'.he said;tlia| the stone must 'have ibSen;,placed on-.MieVpatk for % :Pfes^df|pJ^g^;dM^

corresponds with his name-being an unsuccessful tenderer docs not compel me to close my eyeß to suoh a piece of shameful-work before'my door. "' and reported to the still maintains there were no when ..passed.,by the larger than an orange, ,Tl(H^^H together suitable, for &>{ofiflßß|m fault'of the- mind-and mcaniHHH I instead of oranges. That woIJHBH I As, regards the individual the .letter- having to pay 10s, fhCafon-' said individual does not object to pay for v/uat he gets, hut he decidedly objects to pay for what he does not get. And the individual further considers ho is quite entitled to see he gets value for his money. With all due. respect to Cr Gapper, the individual considers that had the same metal been used in forming the footpaths in Victoria-street he (Cr Gapper) would not only have ebjected, but would have considered himself entitled, as aratepayer, to object to such a waste 1 of public money, especially if CrGapperl had already formed and metalled his 1 footpath at his own expense, and with proper/gravel, according to specified gravel for footpaths, and he had been under the painful necessity of seeing that proper gravel removed and the 1 pathway covered with stuff too coarse for road metal, as was the case withfthe i above-mentioned. Tlie individual stihJ challenges the Council to prove liiJ assertions untrue, as although some of J the larger stones have been removed,' there m still sufficient to convince anyone who is not determined to remain unconearned of the truth of the assertions. Hoping you will not consider I have trespassed too much on your valuable' space, I am, &c, T. P. GißDwoob, Hope-street, Masterton. I
