THE SIRES OF THE SEASON.

The annual horse parade under the auspices of the Pastoral Society, took place at the show grounds, Carterton, on Saturday last, when 10 horses paraded the ring in the presence of about 100 spectators. The small number of horses on Ihe ground which are intended to stand m the Wairarapa this season, prevented much interest being taken in the proceedings, and the parade terminated at about halfpast three, having commenced at 2 p.m. We will first enumerate the thoroughbreds giving precedence to the prize winner at the last three Pastoral shows—

THE PREMIER. As is now pretty well known, he is by the imported hurso Malton, from Revoke, the latter' beii)« by Sir Hercules, out of Finesse. The Premier is thus related to some of the best racing blond that ever laid hoof to the turf. On Saturday he was looking in grand condition, and his beautiful proportions were universally admired. He was without doubt the handsomest horse on the ground, hi will be seen from his announcement in another column, breeders will bo able to secure his services tlm season at his owner's farm on the Taratuhi,' Siine of his stock is said to be even handsomer than himself, and thorough racehorses, so that we may oxpect to see his racing fame enhanced on the Wairarana turf. Dividing the notice of breeders and onlookers pretty evenly was the tall, strongly built horse,

MANGLE, by Traducer, from Flat Iron, hy Pdter Flat, (imported) from Emma. The qualities of the descendants of Traducer are pretty well known and appreciated, and the fact that Mangle has shown that he can yet strong weight carrying hacks, as well as racehorses, makes him a favorite among breeders. Some of his stock will soon be found contesting racing honors on our Wairarapa courses, and though prevented himself by the kick lie received on his leg from showing the speedy qualities of his breeding, his sons and daughters are said to be certain to sustain the honors of their projectors in this direction. Mangle is in splendid condi tion this season, and his owner advertises that he will serve mares at his paddocks, Waihenga, These two horses seemed to attract more favorable notice than anything else on ihe ground, but thore was another very nice little horse there, viz., the tattler, He is by Raven-worth, and is a gentlelooking, pretty horse. His skin is beautifully fine, and his shape almost perfect, He is not advertised to stand this season as he simply runs on his owner's station at Kaumingi,

The lust ol the thoroughbreds (and also the least in point of size and substance) was Mr D, Riddifurd's purebred Arab (imported,) HTTIEJOHSf. He did not create a very favorable impression, for though small he was very leggy, and very hi»h behind, Those wlunVmember Sultan, who was nut cunsidernd a ve/y high class horse when travelled in this district by Mr C&rnmnt, folt very loth to accept Littlejohn as their ideal :I'f the perfect Arab, He was in splendid condition, and was evidently well cared for, but he found no favor among the sdeetators, the handsome Premier and stalwart, good-tempered Mangle thoroughly eclipsing liini. CARRIAGE AND COACH HORSES. THE BARON is a dark bay with black points, by Kakapo, from Queen of Scots, by Fergus, by Sir Hercules, from a wanderer mare, He is a strong upstanding horse, well calculated to succeed in getting the class of stock for which his owner offers his services to breeders. He stands at the Platform Farm, Greytown, CAMDEN. This horse is a vory handsome and strong one, by Bay Camden, of a dark bay color" His stock are said to be turning out very satisfactorily, We understand he will not stand in the Wairarapa this season but will be sent to Napier, and breeders in that place will no doubt welcome this addition to their stnd stock. He is in goud condition, and had many admirers.

THE EAGLE. This is another Kakapo, from Salma, by Fanthorn, from a Riddlesworth mare. He is a tall strong horse of a very pretty iron-gray color, has very good action, and is a good horse for work, He gained the first prize last year for the horse best calculated to improve the breed of saddle horses, He is in splendid condition. It is not certain whether his owner will send him to Napier or let him rsmain this seasou in the Wairarapa. He is offered for sale or to let in our advertising columns,

PONIES, There was only one representative of the pony tribe on the ground, and that was the sturdy little stallion " General Spec," He was the picture of health, and was admired by all. He also stands at Mr Taiicred's farm this season,

DRAUGHT HORSES. GLADSTONE, This was the only draught horse mi parade, and he was a very good specimen of his. class, being very powerful, wMi plenty of bone, good action, and docile temper, Hejis of a dark bay color, stands

very high, and was in good condition. He has a very good claim on the notice of breeders, as he is by Prince Royal, from a Wellington mare, and gained the Ist and a special prize at the last Pastoral show as the best colt foaled since Ist July, 1877. He will travel this year in the Wairarapa, and judging from the opinion expressed on the parade ground, will meet with hit full share of patronage, COLT 3. Mr Kimberley's colt, Barry Lyndon, by Ananias, was also on the ground, He is rising 2 years old, and is already very tall. He is at present rather slight, and looks a little " leggy," but lie lavery wiry, and ive are informed as fleet as the wind. He promises to furnish into a handsome horse aijd sustain the credit of his sire as a getter of strong, healthy and fast stock. SIRES NOT ON THE GROUND. Among the sires who will be at the disposal of breeders this year, who aro advertised but who were not on the ground, are the thoroughbred horse I)uke of Edinbbkgh, by Peter FlatSweetmeat, both imported. He will travel in the Tinui and Whareama district. Young Sator, a well bred horse, by Sator, out of Young Romp, by Fergus, out of Old Rump. He stands at Clifton's farm, Carterton, The draught horse, Young Sir Coijn Campbell, stands at his owner's farm, East Taratahi. He is a thorough farmer's horte, and when his stud season is over goes to work in the plough, or curt, and is thoroughly staunch, and of excellent temper. The only other at present advertised is Sir Charles, a draught horse fruni Napier. We have not yet had the pleasure of seeing him, but have heard he is a splendid specimen of horae flesh.

The arrangements for (he parade were carried out with the efficiency that usually characterises anything undertaken by the Snuie y. The only thing to find fault with was that someone let two or thr&e horses loose in the paddock while the parade was going on, and then chased them round in yet them out, which tnado the horses walking round the ring very restless for a time, but did not otherwise interfere wi'li the proceedings.
