. . Continued. The following reports were presented at the last meeting of the above REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF KUISANOES' DUTIES COMMITTEE. • bra Vile, Bish, and McOai'dle (Chairnan). Your . Committee reports having met ind examined .Mr Ingram, and is of opinion that sections 1,2, aud 3of clause Municipal Corporations Act, 1879, clearly define the proper duties of in Inspector of. Nuisances. Your Committee would, however, recommend—(l) that the following duties be performed by Mr Ingram: —Prosecuting for breaches of the Borough by-laws, looking after unregistered dogs, and , impounding stray sattlfl; (2) that an addition of 8s 6id per week be made to Mr Ingrain's present salary for these additional services. Your 3ommittee is of opinion that the.inorease m the fines aud fees received by the jouucilas a result of adopting your Committee's recommendations' would, in the •Pace of three months, repay a year's insreasedfaalary at the rate recommended. FIRE BRIGADE, : Hie following report of. the Commit--100 appointed tn meet the Morton Volroteer Fire Brigade, and confer as to its irganisation aud proceedings' was read md adopted Your Committee has the honor to •eport.that a conference has beeu held between it and a Committee appointed for <hat purpose by the Fire Brigade, consist ng of Captain Muir, Lieutenant Dixon, md the Secretary, Mr Easthope. The :esult of that conference your Committee tow place's before you. ' 1. The property of the Brigade—The sngine, ladder, and 900 feet of lioae, were Applied by the united Insurance Compaiies, to whom they belong.. In the event )f the Brigade dissolving and no new one 3eing formed, this - property would revert :o the Insurance Companies.- The belljower, buckets, • ropes, lanterns; ipanners, uniforms, &c., are the property )f the Brigade, and it is the intention of ;he Brigade to vest this property in trusses for the Brigade and its "successors >nly. The Brigade is willing, however, io vest the plant, &c., as'for as in its lower, in the Borough Council, or to inter into an agreement to hand over its property to the in the event of a lissolution. 2. The income of the Brigade.-This is it present irregular and unsatisfactory, .t consists of subscriptions, grants from he Borough Council and Insurance Comianiea. The subscribers to the Brigade if last year have intimated that they will [ive less liberally this year, stating" that he Council and Insurance Companies do lot contribute a fair proportion- to the Brigade funds. There is also a complaint rom some of the subscribers that many >eopie who run a considerable risk do not lontribute at all, or do so .to a very limited «tent. The Brigade considers that the ,nsurance Companies have treated it very infairly, having promised to supply enline arid plant to the amount of £IOO, but he engine supplied, although said ta be n good repair—in fact the sum of £2O ?as charged to the Brigade for repairing 6 m Wellington—was found to be utterly tseless, and had to be taken to pipces.aiid entted at the Brigade's 'e?:p ense. before it
could be usod. The Brigade publishes a half-yearly balance-sheet, the last one being published in September, 1879. There as; only a small balance now in hand, but if ; the sum of £BO could be obtained from the Council, jfiTd' the public would subscribe a. similar amount; there would be sufficient funds to, carry on the Brigade uutil the end of its current financialyear. : 3. Present condition of the Brigadesworking.— lhe Brigade is how in efficient working order and has regular practices at which there is a good attendance of members. Certain additional plant is urgently required, to enable, the Brigade to be of material assistance at future* fires. At present it can orilyjhop© to con-F trol small fires, such as those/Occurring in dwellings, in the event pfa. fire in the business portion of the town, where the largest risks are, the Brigade could do very little with its present appliances, the engine, especially, being very ancient, and of very small power. • Your Committee, in bringing the matter before the Council to deal with, desire to recommend that a grant of £ for £ on all subscriptions received from the public, but not exceeding £3O, be made to the Brigade. Your Committee instructed the Town Clerk to bring the matter under the notice of the Insurance Companies with a view to placing the Brigade on a proper J. THE, W. MoOardie, A, W. Renall.
