CARTERTON

[from OCR own correspondent].

Oct. 17. The usual volunteer drill took place in the Public Hall last Tuesday evening, Captain Snodgrass, sub-Lieutenant Ward, and six and twenty rank and file being in attendance* Prior to dismissal, the Captain informed the corps that the ammunition had arrived, the targets were erected, and that the first meeting at the butts would take place on Saturday afternoon, at 2 p m. After trying our best to obtain a resident medical man, I am happy to inform you that Dr Campbell, a recent arrival from the mother 'country, has decided to make his head-quarters here. I understand that he has taken the necessary steps to conform with the provisions of the New Zealand law, and that his consulting •rooms will be in the house adjoining Mr Parker's premises, immediately opposite the tobacconist's shop. The want now supplied has long been required, and I can only wish our new medico every possible prosperity as a return for his thus meeting the requirements of the district. The Taratahi-Carterton Highway Board are supplementing the good work they have already effected, by covering in and deepening and widening the drain from Mr Bowles' butcher shop to the intersection of the main with the Belvidere road, and thence for about a chain along the latter thoroughfare. This has long been a dangerous thorougfare and the work now being effected will avert the probability of any casuality in the future which might otherwise have arisen.

Our Cricket Clubs have at last gone into harness, and proposed matches have, I understand, already been arranged for with other clubs in the valley. Our knights of the willow are rather late in the field, but still I look to them to give a good account of themselves before the season is over, as they should be able to put together a good team to uphold the honor of Carterton and the Taratahi.
