TINUI
(from our own correspondent. ) " October 14, 1879. On Sunday, the 3rd inst., the weather, which had been fine for several days, resumed quite a wintry effect, It was a most bitter day. We had a snow storm in the morning, and what with a keen south-easter blowing, things appeared gloomy indeed, The Rev Mr Goasett did not put in an appearance, No doubt this was owing to the boisterous weather. It cleared up nicely on Tuesday, since which time we have had delightful weather, and the roads are improving.
Some 500 fine fat wethers from Mr Armstrong's station at Ohonga passed here on the 11th for Masterton. These sheep will no doubt be acceptable to the butchers, as they are in splendid condition. The Highway Board met on Saturday, The tenders for metalling were considered, but not accepted, as they were much in advance of the funds available, Fresh tenders are to be called for in a modified form. It appears that several of the most important wards are without funds at present, and as applications are made to improve those centrally situated it is most dissatisfying to the Wardens concerned having no funds, It appears that Mr Groves, Warden for No. 2 Ward, tendered his resignation, Mr Groves, with much good sense, has worked hard for his Ward, and it' is a pity the Board is now losing his help. Mr Baker, the road overseer, also gave notice that he would resign in one month, This gentleman is leaving the district for Ohonga, I hear he has bought the Ohonga Ferry Hotel from Mrs Stilling. This lady and family are coming to reside on their property at Tenui now occupied by Mr Baker. It is hoped the change will be profitable to both parties, The public meeting as convened came off in turn, This meeting was to take into consideration the desirability of securing a piece of land for a cemetery. A committee was formed, and a deputy was appointed to wait upon'Mr Bennet, of Langdale, for the purpose of securing a piece of land most centrally situated, Of course, this means of necessity that the inhabitants will be required to contribute towards the purchasing and fencing. I am happy to say it is not often we are troubled with unruly individuals, but it was found necessary on Saturday to bring an individual before R. Langdon and R. Maunsell, Esq.'s, J.P.'s. The character in question insisted upon having his oirn way, and, having been often warned, would still inebriate, and had become a nuisance. Tiie Bench sentenced this offender to two months' imprisonment in Wellington gaol. Constable Darby le f t here on Monday with the prisoner, The Maungapakeha road has greatly improved, and was there half-a-dozen men put on to improve some of the worst places, traffic would soon improve it much more. The Castlepoint road has also much improved, but there is still some very bad places that needs attention, A large mob of store cattle passed through to-day en route for Napier. This mob is from Mr Burling's station, Tiraumea. This traffic will go a long way to improve the roughness of the road.
The timber for Miller's new hotel is now being carted over from Castlepoint. I notice two loads arrived to-night. Thos. Pickett has the contract for this haulage at, I hear, 5s per hundred feet. There are several carpenters here waiting to commence operations, so I expect in about a month the new hotel will be in a fair way of progress. Shearing has commenced on several of the stations, but I am informed that shearers are rather scarce.
The crops throughout the district are looking well, and to-day we have been favored with a refreshing shower, which is acceptable.
