WAIKARAKA.

(from our own correspondent) October 13,1879. The country down here is looking very well, The grain crops, of which there are about twelve hundred acres in, look very well. It is to be hoped we shall have a good harvest.' Messrs Donald, Lett & Co. and Mr Meredith have been finding employment for a great number of hands this past winter, and, if the harvest turns out a succßßi, there will be a great demand

upon the labor market during summer and autumn.

Shearing has commenced; and the clip promises well, The Sunday before last- we had a very heavy hailstorm, which did a great deal of damage in the gardens. It was heavier at Kummerstein and the back part of Holmewood than elsewhere. During the winter the settlers and workmen got up a series of winter evening entertainments that have been a great success, They have generally been held in the shipping shed, Ilriti, until last Saturday, when we all went up to Plat Point, where about forty-five people, including eleyen ladies, spent a most enjoyable evening, The proceedings were wound up with a vote of thanks and three hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Oarswell, whose excessive kindness and hospitality added so much to the pleasure of the evening. The Chairman announced that the next meeting would be held at the Uriti Shed next Saturday week. There is a project on foot for the erection of a building in a central place, to be used as a Public Hall,

Our wants in this neighborhood in the way of Government help are very great. We have no Post Office within twenty miles, and shall have to go to Masterton to pay our land tax.

There is an excellent opening hero for a good store, There will also be an opening for s wool-comber, who could manage a boiling down.
