CARTERTON.
[mom our own couresponeent] August 13111,1879. The customary weekly drill of the local volunteers took place last night. Captain Snodgrass, Lieutenant W?,vd, and 32 rank and file being present. Owing to the resignation of the senior sergeant, and the consequent advancement by a grade of those noxt in seniority, a competition took place prior to dismissal, between Corporals Shaw and Moore, for the vacant Seigeantship. The competitors hud to put'the Corps through their facings on their own responsibility, the commisioned officers in attendance., and the drill instructor being the judges to decide which of the candidates should be the victor for the vacant stripes. The referees' decision is to be given at the drill, next week.
The Amateur Dramatic Club give their next performance towards the end of the current month. The pieces chosen are •'The Blighted Being," and tho world-wide-known " Box and Cox." The Club have been fortunate enough to obtain the assistance of a lady to take the female
character. The parts have been well cast, aud the public may look forward to a pleasant evening's entertainment, and I hope for a full house, and that all will pass off with the greatest eclat,
