CARTERTON.
(from our own correspondent.) July 12, 1879. A heavy gale of wind, accompanied with a regular deluge of rain, swept oyer our locality' last night,. and this morning
the weather is vory tempestuous, and several blocks of land are in a.flooded condition, The strike of the laborers on the railway and their influx to the township was not at all conducive to our peace and welfare yesterday evening. Whatever may be the rights or wrongs of the matter certain individuals gave-expression to their thoughts in anything but choice or loyal language, and in tne evening one case was taken' up and the result was a pretty smart fight, in which the party who had so freely expressed his want of confidence in the Government, got his receipt in full. The Carterton Amateur Dramatic Club have announced their opening night for the 18th inst., with the popular farces of " Furnished Apartments" and "Two Gay Deceivers." A full-dress rehearsal took place last night in the Public Hall before a limited private audience of members belonging to the Club. The first attempt was very passable, but some of the actors will have to make themselves more perfect in their parts if they wish their first appearance to be a decided success.
