NO. 6 WARD AGAIN!

To the Editor of the Wairaiufa jjaily. Flat Point, July 7th. ' Sib,—l cannot understand how Mr Hitchings arrives at the conclusion that Mr F. G. Moore had lost the confidence of his constituents in the southern end of this ward, after bearing in mind that he (Mr Hitchings) had read, in the presence of myself and others, an expression of satisfaction in Mr Moore's past actions in the interests of the Ward at the meetings of the Board, and of their cordial support in future, which was signed by the southern ratepayers, myself included. I should be glad to know to what motive we are inindebted for the (to say the least of it) misrepresentation contained in his letter. In my humble opinion he only makes a very lame attempt to cast mud that will eventually bespatter himself. Mr Hitchings makes his statement as chairman of the late meeting; could he not also have informed you that the first three resolutions that appear in the report of that meeting were annulled at the instance of himself, in the one appointing a committee to inspect the whole Ward, and report thereon? Notwithstanding this the report appears and not the slightest notice of the southern end in it,—a purely northern get-up. Now, with these facts so plainly before me, it is difficult for me to find an excuse for such conduct, but until I am further enlightened, I eliall charitably ascribe it to thoughtlessness rather than wilful misrepresentation. Mr Hitchings is also in error when he states tnat Mr Cameron was the the only absentee from the South at the late meeting. If I do not occpy too much of your space I will just say a few words with referrence to MrMeredith's letter. No doubt it is fresh in your mind that a very short time ago Mr Meredith and other northern ratepayers, together with some in Castle Point District were red hot for separation. In this scheme Mr Meredith never thought it worth while to even let the southern ratepayeas know such a measure was on foot, thus ignoring them entirely. I wonder at this, especially as he says In his letter of 16th ultimo that the ratepayers of the southern end have a great and positive interest in tho northern end- I wonder how he can reconcile his action in that scheme with the expression above quoted ? I am, &c., Thomas Cakswell.
