The General Election.

Judging by the beautiful weather on Tuesday it seemed as if the very elements wished to present a favourable opportunity for all and sundry to go to the poll. As in other places all over the colony, the greatest interest was centred iu the local option poll, the result of the electoral campaign being regarded as a certain victory for Sir W. J. Steward by a large majority. However, the earlier returns showed that Mr Campbell was polling well and this caused a revival of interest. It was understood that Mr Campbell’s chief strength lay in the Prohibition vote and this was taken by some to be a basis of calculation for the No-License poll. The returns were displayed by means of a magic lantern on a screen accross the County Council door, Mr F. Akhurst being lantern operator and doing the work exceedingly well.

The first return to arrive was that of the Waimate Courthouse, Mr Purchase getting his figures in at 7.25. After half an hour the County Council polling was declared and from thence the country returns came in steadily. As each was shewn there was either applause or groans as the result favoured License or No-License, but only a few partisans did this seriously, the bulk of the crowd being present for amusement. Several eggs were thrown during the evening, but too strict a watch was being kept to make the “ amusement ” worth the risk.

At the Advertiser Office a lantern was also in evidence, but as the Colony’s returns did not commence to come through till late and then came in batches it was found advisable to read them from the upper, window as received. 'The crowd held well together till midnight, when it began to break up, only about thirty being present when the last return was read at 1.30. As each return, electoral or local option, was read the different parties represented expressed their approval or dissent. Christchurch, Dunedin and Oaraaru were most enquired after, Oamaru taking chief place as it was expected that Prohibition would be carried there. Ashburton's re'sult came as a surprise. Sympathy was freely expressed for a publican who recently erected there an hotel costing £IO,OOO. _ Following is THE NEW HOUSE.
