ANNUAL SHOW.
Officers for Year 1902. President, Norton Francis, Esq. Vice-president, Geo, Miller, Esq. Hon. Treasurer, D. P. McLean, Esq. Secretary, Ghas. Akhurst. Honorary Veterinary SurgeoNj T= Gordon Lilico, M.R.C.V.S. Ground Committee- President, H.
Hertslett; Vice-president, D. A. i Morgan; Messrs W. H. Beckett, | J. H. Mitchell, and H. Saunders. General Committee —Messrs W. H. Beckett, J. Fleming Douglas, W. Dunbar, H. Hertslett, J. H, Mitchell, H. A. Morgan, M. McGoverin, H.| E. McGowan, N. M. Orbell, H. Saunders, E. C. Studholme, and W. F- 'Yard.
It is said that fortune favours the brave, and the twenty-first annual Show of the Waimate A. and P. Association, held on their grounds yesterday, looks like an exemplification of the saying. For a number of years they have struggled against heavy loss occasioned by bad weather on the day of the Show, till finally people came to doubt if the Association would ever hold its annual fixture in good weather. However, yesterday broke fine and warm and although the sky was darkened with threatening clouds in the afternoon, the rain kept off and it continued fine, and this attracted ‘the largest crowd ever seen on the Show Grounds, there being anything from 2500 to 3000 present. The amount taken at the gate was over £BO, a highly satisfactory result and one which, taken in conjunctional th the good entries in all classes and the large member’s list is certain to put the Association into a sound financial position. The work of keeping the gate was greatly lessened by an innovation in the form of a ticket office, the gatekeepers receiving tickets only. Another new departure that greatly contributed to esse pf wpfking wp's the forming pf a second ring in which to judge the draught stock, thus gfeatly saving time. Even with this the work of getting through the judging is very great for one day and if next year is equally successful with this one the Association wifi hpve to seriously eppsider the question of holding a two days Show, as is done in Timaru and Oamaru. People are just beginning to reoogniso that Waimate is a growing centre, and that its Show is equal to, if not in some classes better, than the Shows held in larger towns. The show of i'-. v,.-: L'.. S, 1 :
dairy produce was fair. The fancy butter was very artistic, the second prize being gained by a novelty in the form of a velvet shield with butter edging and “ Waimate Hospital, 1902.” The class for collection of home-made produce only brought one entry, Mrs S. J. Adams, but it was very good and was deservedly given the ard ticket. In regard to the show ground appointments, one thing badly needed is the erection of a good number of seats where people might rest. Walking round all day is very tiring, and no doubt a number of people stay away from this very cause.
The most notable feature of the Show was the fine lot of draught stock brought forward. This speaks volumes for the intelligence of the farmers and others engaged in the breeding of draught stock. The quality of the stock throughout was well up to the standard of other centres. There was a fair lot of sheep and the cattle, though not numerically strong, were of very good quality. There was a fine display of light horses ,and as usual the jumping attracted a good deal of attention, and the interest always evinced in this class leads one to think that it would be better taken earlier in the day. The stock riding competition was a new feature and, like most feats of skill or horsemanship, attracted all the attention of the crowd. A number of the competitors, particularly Messrs F. Lundon and E. 0. Studholme, received loud applause for their efforts.
Right through the day the Show was of unfailing interest. There was a splendid display of implements and these had constant attention, One or two side shows did good business, and the publican’s booth, ran by Mr B. Flynn, of the Criterion Hotel, and the confectioner’s booth, ran by Mr J. Symon, ■were securing steady trade. A full note of the implements will appear next issue.
The officials worked well without exception, but special mention must be made of Mr C. Akhurst, the Association's secretary. Being secretary of any body is a tiring task, but Mr Akhurst seems to have a limitless stock of energy, and he has used it for the Association’s good, in fact it is very largely due to his persistent- efibrta that the Show reached \ts high standard of excellence
