President Roosevelt is conducting a series of meetings in the middle a..d .western States, including Cincinnati and Detroit. The tour lias been interrupted at Indianopollis, where the ordered an operation to remove a small abscess from a bruise below the left knee, the result of the Pittsfield accident. At Court yesterday, in the cases against several small boys from Mcrven for breaking insulators, a substantial fine was imposed, or in default seven days’ imprisonmem. It does seem as if the quality of mercy was strained in this instance, as the younger culprits ranged from ten to twelve years of age. Of course replacing insulators means a heavy expense to the Government, but considering that this was the first case brought in the district, a lighter penalty might with justice have been imposed, more especially as there seems to have been some doubt about the matter, as evidenced by the fact that two boys were summoned who had not been to school sines the 24th March. There are many offences of a much more serious character in which the culprit is not meted out one-half the punishment awarded in this case. Still, it seems that the greater the offence the smaller the punishment, and vice versa.

The lych gate at St. Augustine’s Church is now well under way, Mr Maynard, the contractor, having already laid a good portion of the stone work.
