Choral Society Concert.

On Tuesday night the above society gave their fourth oncer!, (third season) to a well-filled hall. The programme consisted of six choruses, four songs, a 'cello aud two violin solos, and two orchestral pieces.

The Kev. Mr ?vforrison, president of the Society, gave an address before the first item upon the effect of music on different people, and said he trusLd the entertainment would have a good effect upon those present. The choruses wore well sang and showed diligent practice. Special mention ein bo made of the " Song of the Vikings," all of the members appearing to enter into the spirit of the piece. " Tho Sea Hath its Pearls " was not quite so well rendered, the time being a little off occasionally, hut the light and shade were wall a'tended to. The last one, " Fantasia on National Airs," a clever arrangement, was sung with spirit, and was much appreciated.

The soloists wore Mesdames Morrison and Jones and Messrs Evans and Muir. Mrs Morrison sang with feeling, but unfortunately was suffering from a bad cold. Mrs Jones rendered " Daddy" in a

sympathetic manner. Of the gentlemen Mr Evans acquitted himself very creditably in the song " Asleep in the Deep," but ho took it rather too slowly. He responded an encore with the favourite Scotch song, " Mary of Argyle." Mr Muir (Balclutha) gave a careful rendering of "Nirvana" (by S. Adams), and responded to an encore with " Mary" (Richardson). A violin solo, Mosgkowski's Op. H, No. 2 and '• Humorske (Keopping) were played with exceeding care and refinement by Miss Tivrnbull and were much appreciated by the audience. This young iady responded to vociferous demand with one of Do Uariot's airs in her usual artistic style. Miss Sinclair also played '• Souvenir de Sorrento " with pienty of spirit and in a way that showed m.ich diligent practice, she responded to an encore with that charming " Sorenata " by Moskowski, both pieces being well received. Mr Muir gave a 'ceilo solo, ,c Slumber Song." The first orchestral piece '■ Einale in C " (Haydn) was well maintained and carefully played. The second one, " Zauberllaute," started well, but got a little out of time. However this was soon lecdiied, and the rest of it was played in a masterly way.

- The entertainment on the whole was a good performance, and the Bociety arc to be congratulated upon their efforts under the able condtntorship of lie Goldstone. Miss Akhur.st, assisted by Mrs Hamilton, accompanists, both performed their duty in their usual artistic style.

The singing of the Nation:!l Anthem brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
