Technical Classes Association.

A public meeting was' held on Thursday evening to discuss the question of holding Technical classes in Waimate. Mr W. M. Hamilton chairman of the school committee presided and explained the objects of the meeting. There was an attendance of about forty and there were a number of apologies. Mr Crawford, who had had experience of technical classes, expressed his belief that with energy.and hard work, good classes could bo established in '■ Waininte. All that was necessary was to disabuse people that the classes were for the elder school children. Mr Hutchinson, who had had to do with technical classes, said he was sure classes could be run successfully in Waimate. Ho knew of several who had gained their entrance to the university through technical classes. The Rev. A. S. Morrison moved that an association should be formed to carry on technical classes in Waimate. Mr Pitcaithly urged that action should bo taken at once without waiting for the acceptance of the association by the Government. They would accept the association about mid winter, Mr G. A. Wilson seconded the notion, agreeing with Mr Pitcaithly ;hat all possible despatch should be jsed in getting a start made with the jlasses. The motion was carried vunaninously. The membership feo was fixed at 2a 6d. Mr Nicol moved and Mr T. Hardy seconded that a committee should be appointed consisting of Messrs Pitcaithly, Crawford, Hutchinson, Mann, and the Egw A. S. Morrison. Messrs Hamilton and Nicol declined to stand for election, as they wore members of the School Committee, and consequently had an Interest in the classes. The question of what would be taught was discussed, and the following wore recommended to the committee : —Arithmetic, English, mensuration, book-keeping, typewriting, science, elocution, drawing, painting, French, Latin, wood-carving, wood- . work, dressmaking, A committee meeting was held after the above meeting, when the Rev. A. S. Morrison was appointed Chairman of the Committee, and Mr Pitcaithly superintendent of the classes. Mr Hutchinson was appointed secretary and treasurer. An opening lecture by Mr Pitcaithly is to be given at an early date, and advantage will be taken on that evoning to enrol pupils so that a start may be made with the classes directly after Eastor.
