The Eighth Contingent.

i Wellington, January 10. Lieutenant-Colonel Bavies has accepted command of the Eighth Contingent. Captain Bingley, at present adjutant in Canterbury,. is to be brigade-major; Captain Matthews and Sergeant-Major Rogers are to be staff officers; Captain Bartlefcfc will command the North Island battalion, with Captain Poison as second in command; Major Chaytor will command the South Island battalion, with Captain Jackson as second in command.

At a meeting of citizens to-day, it was decided to give a luncheon to the men of the Eighth Contingent prior to their embarkation from this port on the 23rd inst. Christchurch, January 10. The announcement that Major Chaytor was to be placed in command of the South Island battalion, with Captain Jackson second in command, gave disappointment, a:i the tatter's general South African experience was considered to give him a prior claim. Captain Bingley has been offered the position of brigade-major. The general impression appears to be that Captain Jackson has been placed in a very false position, as a camp order issued on January Bth distinctly stated that he had been appointed to the command of the South Island battalion of the Eighth Contingent. It is said to be probable that after Major Chaytor takes over the command Captain Jackson will resign from the contingent.
