Meeting of Ratepayers.

A meeting of ratepayers was held in the Eedcliff Hotel on Friday evening, Mr J. F. Douglas presiding over an attendance of about fifteen settlers.

Mr Douglas explained that the object of the meeting was to get an expression of opinion to whether the crossing over Elephant Hill Creek should be by a ford or a bridge. He requested the County Engineer to gi\e details of tha alternative proposals for which he had prepared estimates. Mr Bremner described briefly the method of constructing a raised ford* way which he considered would provide a durable and permanent crossing. He gave a description of the style of bridge suited to the crossing under d.scussion with an estimate of its cost. Mr Wall said he was strongly In favour of the bridge and he deprecated anything in the nature of a ford which he considered would be a merely temporary contrivance. Messrs Bryan, Cuthbert and several others were also of the opinion that the Council should build a bridge rather than a ford as a former ford had proved unsatisfactory. On ths motion of Messrs ,T. Wall and Middleton it was unanimously decided that a bridge should be built over the creek.
