Education Board.
The following are some items of business which came before the above Board in Timaru yesterday : The Waimate Technical Association having transmitted through the Board certain requests to the Education Department, the Inspector-General wrote poiming oat certain informalities in the correspondence,and insisting on due observance of the regulations. It was ordered that the reply and criticism of the Department ba forwarded to Waimate. The following tenders were accepted subject to conditions of time penalty:—Waikakahi, new school, £205 { contractor, Mr Hardy. Additions to Rodclitf, £9B, same contractor. No tender
wither for certain, repairs at Teinuka or for desks and flooring uc Waimate was received.
Applications for appointments at Milford and Silverstream were forwarded to tbbs* committees with the Board’s preference for cm tain individuals.
W.dhao , Downs having asked fur a male teacher bn the ground that a female would find it difficult to secure' lodgings, and that the class of pupils expadei would probably require the strong hand of a man; moreover, tint from now to the end of the year the station, in the very ■ of which the little schoolroom (just one of the huts) would be situated, would be overrun with shearers and others, not the most fitting society for a young girl, the request was thought reasonable, and in the meantime a locum tenens, if procurable, is to be sent.
- It was announced that the Geraldineschool had been gazetted as. a District High School, and the - scholarship committee was instructed to suggest how, as among the staff, the fees coming from the Government should be distributed.
The report of Dr, Symes on sanitary matters was directed to be handed to the architect and inspectors with a view to .ascertaining how far the suggestions of the health officer were practicable, and wouKi come withiu the means of the Board.
The Board having written to solicit the co-operation of the South Canterbury Board in protestingagainstthe newly-proposed scale of staff and salaries, the letter was handed to the scholarship committee to look into the matter.
The Rev. Mr Barclay, having visited the Hunter - District in connection with the proposed erection of a library by a local library committee, reported exhaustively, recommending concession of a site within the school grounds area, rent, fencing, surveys and other conditions. The report was adopted. Mr Keddie, of Bt. Andrews, having »ent in his resignation, a member of the Board took occasion to express the esteem in which Mr Kiddie Was held, and the value placed on his services. The Board was - instructed to take steps to have the vacancy filled. The inspectors submitted their annual reports on a number of schools, such reports in some cases not being very satisfactory.
