Farmers’ Union.
The Canterbury provincial conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union commenced at Ashburton on Tuesday, 30 delegates being present iron* 20 branches.
It was decided that farm labourers should be admitted to membership of the union, the name of which was altered to the Farmers aud Farm Workers’ Union.
The conference agreed that a separate provincial district should be formed for South Canterbury.
The representation from delegates from branches to the Provincial Conference was fixed at one for each 10D or fraction of 100 members, representetion from each provincial district to the Colonial Council was fixed at one delegate for each 1000, or fraction of 1000, members. The conference, after a lengthy discussion, unanimously resolve !, on the motion of Mr W;. S. Muslin (Timaru) and Mr G. Gardiner (Cheviot), in favour of Crown tenants under the lease i.i perpetuity or perpetmil lease having the opportunity of purchasing the freeholds. It was resolved, on the raption of Mr Gardiner (Cheviot), that members of Parliament be riot eligible for seats on Lund Boards. A proposal by Mr Corrigan (Morven). that on each Land Board a Crown tenant should have a seat, was lost on the voices. Mr Corcoran (’vVaimate) moved that the. system of granting a'rebate to some Crowtf'tenants and not to others should be abolished or applied to all alike. Mr Ward (Waimate) seconded the motion, and said the rebate did not assist the man it was intended to. and the man who could afford it paid’ up n'is . renf and got the rebate, but the poor man who could not pay up got no benefit. After a discussion, it was resolved to divide oh the motion and on being put it was unanimously resolved that this rebate to Crown tenants should be abolished.—Press.
