Caledonian Society.
The annual meeting, held on Saturday night, was very largely attended, Mr G. S. Mathias (president) occupying the chair. Before proceeding to the business tho president made feeling reference to the loss by death of the late Mr John Cochrane, who had beea long an enthusiastic member, and had creditably filled the various positions from president downwards. He proposed that a vote of condolence be passed, and that a letter conveying the same be sent to his mother and other members of the family. This was seconded by Mr M. Duggan and carried. .
The secretary (Mr F. J. Backley) read the minutes of last annual meeting, which were confirmed. Messrs Hutchinson and J. Murdoch were elected members of the Society. On the motion of Messrs Carter and Scott, it was resolved that all members of the Society should be directorsThe balance Bheefc of the Society was read, and showed a credit of £SO 13s 2d. The annual report congratulated members on the satisfactory meeting held last year, although the wot weather somewhat interfered with the attendance. They had commenced with a credit of £26 18s, and had ended with £SO 13s 2d. The gate -showed a falling off of £6 7s, and the entries of £5 Is, but the concert was the most successful yet held, elsaring £l6 4s, and more than made up these deficiencies. The balance sheet and report were adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year wa3 then proceeded with.
Before vacating the chair, Mr M'athias congratulated the Society on the very successful year just past, and anticipated that, with the influx of now settlers in the distri3t, the Society should go ahead by leaps and bounds. On nominations being called for, Mr Mathiaa was unanimously reelected to the office.
The following officers wore also appointed : Vice-president, Mr W. J. Dailey; treasurer, Mr A. Carter; secretary, Mr F. J. Ruckley ; auditors. Messrs J. T. Quinn and W. L. Scott. It was decided to hold a Scotch concert on Boxing Night as usual. The following were appointed a committee to draw up the sports programme, to be laid before a general meeting to be held later:— Messrs J. W. Cowan, R. Cameron, J. W. Freeman, Saunders, Goldstone, Twomey, G. Miller, McLeunan, Wills and the officers. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers.
A concert committee, consisting of Messrs Goldstone, Wills, Hamilton and the officers, was also elected.
Mr Rupert Cameron spoke of the necessity of the building of a shed to put their plant in. The president said the boards and flags had been lent round to all tb.039 who required them, but they now wanted renovation. He thought the suggestion a good one. Some time ago it had been intended to charge a fee for their use, but this was not followed out. However, when they got them repaired, thej must make a rule that a fee of 5s would be charged. A suggestion to get a flag each year was made and approved, but nothing was decided on. It was -decided to write to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and ask leave to store the plant in their shed. A suggestion was made that the track in Victoria Park should be asphalted, and it was said the cost (about £100) was prohibitive, but if the newly-formed Amateur Athletic Association would help, and the Star Cycling Club would give the £25 it promised, something might be done. This was all the business.
