Conference of County Councils.
_— o Wellinttox, July IS. The County Councils’ conference opened to-day, and immediately proceeded to discuss the Counties Bill. There was considerable debate on the proposed constitution of districts, and in this connection clause 2 was struck out. On the clause providing that every new county shall be divided into nine ridings, the proposal that fifteen ridings should be inserted was agreed to. A number of the delegates urged in the constitution or new ridings the ratable value as well as the population should be taken into account, and with a view to making a provision to this effect, clause 7 was struck out and a new clause to replace the one deleted is to be drafted by the Revising Commirteo.
Tim Conference resolved to recommend the reduction of the area com prising town districts. A resolution was moved in the direcuon of abolishing road districts in order to save the expense of dual admi.r.stradon, Sir George Clifford and several other delegates expressed expressed the hope that the provisions of the the Bill with regard to road districts would not be interfered with. Others thought that where county councils and road boards overlapped each other something should be done. The question was still under discussion when the conference nd'■ioumed.
