The Returning Troops.

Wellington, July 16. The officers and men of the fourth ami fifth contingents were entertained at a luncheon to day by the cinzens of Wellington, the Mayor presiding. .Amongst those present wore the Premier and Mrs Seddon, Sir Joseph, and Lady Ward and the Hons. G. H. Mills and J. Carroll.

The hall was gaily decked with banting, and there was ft large attendance of troops. The customary toasts were proposed and enthusiastically honoured, that of the Returned Troopers being proposed by tho Premier. During the proceedings a corporal of tire fifth contingent presented the Premier with a kaross, or rug, composed of silver jackal skins, fie explained that when they arrived at Mafekiug the New Zealand battalion, which he represented, took part in a sports meeting. After their winning everything, a Mr Muhlenbeck took them to his house and entertained them. He had five sons fighting against the Boers. He expressed his high esteem for Now Zealand s Premier, and desired them to present this kaross to him with Mr Muhlenbeck’s best wishes for his continued success.

The returned troopers of the fourth .and fifth contingents had a splendid reception to-day, when there was one of the largest turn-outs of the public ever seen here. The Cheering was exceptionally hearty. A large procession marched through the town to the Park, where a few words of welcome were said. A social is being held to night, at which the formal welcome takes place.
