A Strange Case.
Wellington, April 12.
Michael Brennan was to-day charged with having committed bigamy aj| Wellington on November 28th, 1900, by marrying Agnes Wright. Henry George Wright, of Clyde, Otcgq, gave evidence that he was married tq' Annie Garden Campbell in in March or April of 1889. He subsequently lived with her in other parts of Victoria, and in Dunedin, and separated from her in -May, 1898 After that Kb did not see her again till he met her in Court. There was one child (a girl) issuo of the marriage. He went to Clyde aftf r leaving his wife, life with whom be found to he hell upon earth. In the meantime he had her money at intervals, perhaps £2O to £25 altogelhe .
Asked by defendant’s counsel why Le bft his wife and child to starve, the witness stated that he had no money himself at the time, and she had to pu I along as best she could, the same as he h»d. He had received the letters put in evidence alleged to have been writ 1 en by accused. They purported to come from one McGregor, who represented himself to b? connected wi h a Society for the Protection of Women, and who asked Wright co forward money to Wellington for his wife’s support. Accused stated that when on being fir-t charged ho pleaded guilty, it was not to bigamy, but simply to the act< f marrying the woman. Accused was committed for trial.—Pi ess.
