Day Labour.
DISCUSSION BY THE HARBOUR BOARD. On Tuesday at the meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board the Chairman said that he had seen in one of the papers that a discussion had taken place at the Levels County Council and at the Mount Peel Road Board regarding the action of the Board in employing d«,y labour on the co itract. All he had got to say was that if those who had discussed the action of this Board in employing day labour thought that they could manage the contract better than the present Board they had better come and take their place. They would be quite at liberty to come and try to do better. Mr Thew said that he had been asked by the Mount Peel Road Board to bring this question before the Board, as the ratepayers in his district would like to know how much the work was going to cost the n. It appeared to be the general belief’,'too-,"that-day labour was not the moat economical, and he would not have voted that the work should be done by day labour at last meeting of the Board except cm the understanding that It was only to be temporary. According to the present rate of spending, he said the £45.000 would be spent before they ha’d got two-thirds of the work done. He questioned whether the Board could legally spend as much as they were doing. The Chairman said they were acting quite legally. The Board must push on the work as fast as possible, at least until they had sufficient stone down to protect the breakwater. —Morning Post.
