Fire Brigades' Conference.

o Christchurch, February 25. The Fire Brigades’ Conference opened to day with a large number of delegates present, The Mayor of Christchurch and the Chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee welcomed the delegates. The latter urged that steps should be taken to introduce a Fire Brigade Bill into the House.

The report of the executive stated the assets at £2BB 19s 2d, compared with £lB7 13s 2d last year. The accident society membership now 1 is 1000; claims during the year amounted to £62 15s ; funds increased by £lO7 14s lid ; credit balance, £729 11s Bd. An exhaustive report was presented by the delegates to Paris, who recommended certain improvements for increasing the efficiency of brigades, particularly to the increase of the number of chemical engines and the improvement in appliances for getting rapidly to fires.
