At the beginning of the American oivil war, before years of hardship had stiffened the Northern men and made them the world's besfc troops, a Federal General, seeing a private in a hole in the gionnd, ordered him at once to join fche fighting line. " No, General," replied the man, who apparently knew his superior, " you want to get here yourself." This, it ia suggested, is about the typo of discipline which seems to have been displayed by our earliest ievies.
