SIEGE OF LADYSMITH.
It is estimated that some 2000 horses were killed in order to augment the food supply during the siege of Ladysmith, oue'half of these being* issued by the contractors as meat and sausages, the balance being converted into " chevril " by the military authorities. Four white men and 30' natives were divided iiito day and night shifts, and turn-d out 3000.1bs of sausages* daily as long as the* skins lasted, and thereafter issued mincemeat. A xation of sausagemeat and a pint of " cnevril '' was " extra," and we ar.e assured that the troops were better physically at the end of the siege than they were a month or aix weeks previously— that ia to say, before the horseflesh was'rierved out. About 4500 head of cattle were .killed during the siege. \
