NEW RUSH
to a terrace, situated about threequarters of a mile on the b^aeh side of the flat, occurred on Wednesday, at a point half a mile to the south of the junction of a small creel; with the Waimea Creek. The sinking is from i 12ft to 18ft through bi'own gravel, intermixed with large boulders. The prospectors obtained two grains to a dish, with about two feet of wash. A few other claims are bottomed without payable prospects being found. Several parties have been working in the creek for some time, and they are doing well. A head race has been granted to Frastr and party, who tunnel from the creek and wash about three feet of dirt. On the terrace near the OLD AUCKLAND RUSH several holes are bottomed and payable prospects obtained. The end farthest away from the Waimea Creek is found to be shallower and not so good as the other-end. In and about UVERPOOL Blil/S GULLY many parties are settling down to their work, which now pays them well. On the terrace midway between Stafford Town and the Waimea township several miners are obtaining fair returns. The sample of gold here is very heavy and coarse, and hopes are entertained that many terraces in the neighborhood will be worked with profit. In the vicinity of the big dam up the RIGHT-HAND BRANCH of the Waimea, a good many parties have set in to work during the week, and good wages are obtained there. At Greek's No. 1 , the shaft which had been sunk to a depth of G5 feet list week, is not yet bottomed. Up the LEFT-HAND BRANCH there arc a great many workings as far as Callaghan's, and at the head o{ German Gully some good ground is being wrought. Altogether the old district does not show signs of being exhausted, and a large population will, no doubt, be well paid for their mining operations for years to come.
